The sister of a man who was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash says she feels "helpless" as he fights for his life alone in a Thailand hospital.

Its not a just a few quid to save a citizen though.

 

Its like every other day someone from the UK has come to grief riding a scooter and up goes the gofundme request.

 

Should the UK "spend a few quid" saving everyone that is under insured or has had insurance declined due to the person engaging in activities not covered or not legally allowed to do ?

And we also waste hundreds of millions on people trying to get into the uk illegally and another similar amount on overpayed lawyers trying their utmost to stop them being legally deported. But why should the embassy step in when people are often their own worst enemies.

In January, I had my insurance company decline coverage citing pre-existing conditions.

 

I borrowed money to pay the bill, it will take me 12 months to repay the money.

 

I do not expect handouts from the government nor strangers to cover my bill because my family are to stingy to help me out financially in a time of need.

For those who don't know. If you own a bike in Thailand; you have to have mandatory insurance and pay annual motor tax. The insurance you get will cover health care costs as well as third-party costs should you incur damage to others. Hospitals will get reimbursed from the insurance company.

 

If you are a tourists renting a bike. You'll definitely need health insurance that covers motorbike accidents, but you must (in most cases) have a drivers license and should have wear a helmet during the accident. Otherwise, the insurance company won't pay any liabilities. 

 

Be careful out there, and hopefully the 25 y/o man gets back to normal soon.

That mandatory insurance, the porobor, is very limited in the payout. It will only cover medical expenses and death, not material damage. Rental bikes will have the same porobor coverage

Come to Thailand where 80% of the road fatalities are motorcycles, rent a motorcycle as at 25 years old you're sure you'll live forever and Death is at least 60 years away, get in an accident because every instant of your ride time needs to be devoted to defensive driving, and literally the second you take your eye off the road or get distracted?  "Horror Crash." 

My recommendation to virtually everyone who comes to Thailand on vacation?  Don't rent a M/C unless you have a significant amount of experience, and then.....still don't rent a M/C.  If you do, make sure your insurance is going to cover you when you go down.  Death would be doing the kid a favor although dying at 25 really sucks.  Best of luck kid.  Very sad.

Mandatory insurance (Por Ror Bor) is applicable to every bike (owned or rental) that has current road tax paid.

 

Por Ror Bor only pays up to 60 to 80k.

If you rent a bike as a tourist you are offered the same miserable amount of government insurance which amounts to around 35000 baht if you are at fault as a Thai . That amount would be gone overnight if you were to be taken to a private hospital . There is a higher amount on offer if the accident was proven that you were not at fault .

Tourist or a  Thai National it is the same . 

Most tourist are uninsured when mounting a motorcycle license or no license  due to the contract they agree too .

Be careful out there when giving out false information .

I doubt if the young man will ever be normal again  but I hope i am wrong .

Porobor will pay, licensed or not. But agreed, the cover is very limited. But which contract would render an insurance invalid?

Travel insurance tourists take out from there home country often stipulate the use of motorcycles are not covered .

Sometimes, yes, but not common. More common is they're not covered due to a lack of a valid license.
