Hit-and-Run Driver Crashes into Canal and Dies After Colliding with Father and Son
Picture from responders. A pickup truck driver who fled the scene after hitting a father and son in Suphan Buri later lost control of his vehicle, crashed into a bridge railing, and plunged into a canal, where he died at the scene. The incident occurred at 19:10 on March 2, when Pol. Lt. Adisak Semrod, an investigator from Song Phi Nong Police Station, was notified of a collision involving a pickup truck and a motorcycle with a sidecar. The crash took place near the clock tower in Bang Li Market, Song Phi Nong district, Suphan Buri province. The victims, a 35-year-old man named Sarawut and his four-year-old son, Papawin, sustained injuries. Sarawut suffered minor injuries, while his son had ear torn off and abrasions. Both were transported to Somdet Phra Sangharaja XVII Hospital for treatment. At the scene, police found a damaged motorcycle with a sidecar, registered in Suphan Buri, and a license plate believed to belong to the fleeing pickup truck, registered in Ang Thong. Witnesses reported that after the crash, the pickup driver immediately sped away, heading towards the Ban Li-Makham Lom Road. Eyewitnesses, including a municipal firefighter, reported seeing sparks flying from beneath the speeding pickup truck. The motorcycle’s exhaust pipe had become lodged under the vehicle. The firefighter, along with emergency responders from the Semor Gun Rescue Foundation, pursued the fleeing driver. About five kilometres from the initial crash, at a curve near Ban Don Krabuang Bridge in Bang Phlap subdistrict, the pickup driver lost control, crashed into the bridge railing, and plunged into the canal. The vehicle was completely wrecked, and the driver was found trapped inside. Rescue workers used floodlights and hydraulic cutting tools to extricate the driver, a process that took over an hour. The deceased was identified as 53-year-old Somphong, a resident of Wiset Chai Chan district in Ang Thong province. Somphong’s relatives arrived at the scene and were overcome with grief, with one family member fainting and requiring medical assistance. His body was later sent for an autopsy at Somdet Phra Sangharaja XVII Hospital. According to initial investigations, Somphong was a sporting goods vendor. Before the crash, he had driven from Kanchanaburi after picking up footballs for delivery to Ayutthaya. While driving through Bang Li Market, he collided with Sarawut and his son but fled the scene. His reckless escape attempt ended when he crashed at high speed and died in the wreckage. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. -- 2025-03-03 -
