onthedarkside
Artificial intelligence could lead to the extinction of humanity, experts - including the heads of OpenAI and Google Deepmind - have warned. Dozens have supported a statement published on the webpage of the Centre for AI Safety. ukrules
What this is about : Existing AI firms are simply pushing for regulation to make life difficult for future entrants. That pretty much sums it up.
webfact
Top artificial intelligence (AI) executives including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday joined experts and professors in raising the “risk of extinction from AI”, which they urged policymakers to equate at par with risks posed by pandemics and nuclear war. “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” more than 350 signatories wrote in a letter published by the nonprofit Center for AI Safety (CAIS). As well as Altman, they included the CEOs of AI firms DeepMind and Anthropic, and executives from Microsoft and Google. Also among them were Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio – two of the three so-called “godfathers of AI” who received the 2018 Turing Award for their work on deep learning – and professors from institutions ranging from Harvard to China’s Tsinghua University. Purdey
I doubt humans will become extinct unless we give AI the ability to build new versions of itself. We could be in for a period of bliss as AI takes care of our needs.
Berkshire
Upside: AI can help make human lives better by finding solutions in medicine, transportation, subsistence, energy, health and safety, etc. Downside: See the movies Matrix, Terminator, etc.

That pretty much sums it up. I think they are pushing for future regulation to distract from what they are doing right now. AI is here, and it’s being used now. AI is choosing what adverts you see, it’s choosing the feed you see on your social media. Corporations are gathering data on anyone using social media, shopping on line, viewing videos, reading online content and plugging it into AI. They are not doing it for your benefit. It's known as 'regulatory capture' where the current 'players' encourage regulation in order to keep others out. The bar for entry would be set very high, everyone involved right now of course would be grandfathered in. That way there's no competition - what they fear is an arms race which reduces their current monopoly to zero. A fine example of this kind of approach by big business is the beer brewing regulations in Thailand. All stitched up between a couple of mega corporations with a massive bar to entry for new producers. That's what they're doing, they will write their own regulations anyway. nobodysfriend
Humanity urgently needs to change it's behavior towards this planet if they want to survive . May be , AI can regulate this ...? No more Nationalities , no more passports , no more races , just humans living in a unified world without hating each other because of their respective cultural backgrounds ... Only together it will be possible to solve existential problems facing this planet and it's dominant species . AI could help a lot ( f.e. in replacing corrupt politicians ) Edited June 1, 2023 by nobodysfriend

Don't let the title put you off, It is an out of context quote. Edited June 2, 2023 by sirineou
JackGats
What is one trying to divert attention from with this scare-mongering about AI? The problem with machines are noisy dumb machines - like lorries - that crush and kill and belch fumes, not silent intelligent machines that interract and take over drudging work.
