Thai Chef Wins Top UK Cooking Show

A Thai woman who learned to cook on an open fire in rural Chiang Mai has won British TV’s biggest cooking competition.

 

Chariya Khattiyot, 40, dedicated her MasterChef success to the late grandfather who taught her to cook as he brought her up alone.

 

“This is unbelievable. It means the world, the sun, the moon and everything to me. I don’t think anything can top this,” she said after receiving her trophy from judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace.

 

“I’m so happy. This just proves that if you dream something and you work really hard and you never give up, you can get it. That’s what my grandad said to me — never give up. He would be so proud of me.

 

“We did not have a lot of money. I used to pretend I had my own restaurant and cook on an open fire. My grandad was my only customer.”

 

Chariya triumphed over 44 other contestants including finalists Anurag Aggarwal and Omar Foster in the eight-week BBC One contest.

Her winning menu in the June 1 final started with a Thai lotus tuille filled with coconut jelly, fried king prawns and pomelo salad flavoured with honey, palm sugar and coconut.

Nonsense.  She's not a chef.  Her day job is a coffee roaster.  She's a talented home cook.  That is all.

She was consistently good throughout the competition, which is rare. Most have a bad day along the way but scrape through. Some of the things these contestants (not just her) produce are incredible. I'd quite like to have been a chef myself, but spending a couple of hours to produce something that is eaten in 10 minutes?

A chef is a professional cook.  She is not a chef, and winning that program doesn't make her one.  Of course, there's nothing wrong with being a good cook.

It's the perfect springboard in making the transition from an enthusiastic and talented amateur to a professional chef by your definition as several previous winners have shown, opening their own restaurants or working in top ones. Given this lady's drive, charachter and obvious talent I'm in no doubt she'll go on to achieve her goal of opening her own restaurant.

Rubbish. Have you actually watched the series?

Sure the early rounds include some clunkers but the standard of the competitors that reach the semis and final is exceptional; whilst not chefs by profession, the quality of food produced puts that of many 'professional chefs' to shame. Several of the winners and finalists have successfully changed career off the back of their success and become professional chefs.

"Thai Lamb" isn't too easy to find in Thailand.

Given that this was a British show…Toad in the Hole being their specialty dish (sorry all)…..an unusual Thai dish probably amazed the judges…..:)

When were you last in UK, 1964?!   I can't remember ever having eaten Toad in the Hole (possibly as a child 50+ years ago).

Nobody is going to be 'amazed' by a Thai dish. Even small UK towns have Thai restaurants - even specificly Isaan and 'Northern Style' restaurants. Ingredients are readily available in supermarkets.......including (to the delight of my wife) pla-ra sauce...
