A Kazakh man was arrested on Thursday at Phuket international airport on suspicion of involvement in the shooting of a Russian national in the commercial area of the resort island on Wednesday.

The suspect was apprehended by Thai police as he was trying to board a flight bound for Russia, according to the investigative commander of the Region 8 Provincial Police Bureau.

Riding a motorcycle, wearing gloves, a jacket and with his face covered by a crash helmet and hood, a gunman approached a car, being driven by the Russian national, which had stopped in front of a coffee shop. He fired several shots from a pistol at the person in the driver’s seat, seriously injuring him.

By Goongnang Suksawat

Phuket – A Kazakhstani suspect has been arrested at Phuket International Airport after a Russian businessman was injured after being shot while he was in a car at a popular cafe in Phuket. The suspect has initially been charged with overstaying.

The Phuket Provincial Police Commander Major General Sermphan Sirikong told the Phuket Express on Thursday afternoon (June 8th) that the Kazakhstani suspect had overstayed his legal visa, although the exact number of days he had overstayed was not mentioned by relevant law enforcement officials. At this stage, he has been charged with overstaying and other potential charges like attempted murder are under investigation and review.

The suspect has not cooperated well in the questioning process, added police, and has requested to meet with the Kazakhstan embassy as he did not speak English or Thai.

Probably as he knows he will get whacked by the same people that employed him to hit the Russian.

But I am OK with holding him in prison until he sings like a bird - few months in a thai pesthole prison and he may well have  a different attitude

I guess with the proliferation of hundreds of thousands of Russians and other European people in Thailand make it ever so easy to commit a crime, which is a big, added headaches for the poorly equipped local police.

They have been surprisingly fast in arresting the culprit .

Of course , Thailand is attractive to many people , bad ones as well ...

But , up to now , I do not have the impression that the RTP is overwhelmed and unable to handle this ...

Corruption always was a traditional part of Thai society , and that is what enabled the existence of those Chinese " Clubs " . But if they bribe one but not the other one , it means trouble , too ...

What if the victim refuses to press charges, can they still nick him for attempted murder or not ? If they are both into some dodgy business then they'll both keep stum. Circumstantial evidence, no gun no prints ?

Thailand is going to have a rough ride in the coming years with the proliferance of Chinese and Russians.

History of their settlement elsewhere is an open book.

That would be the Yellow Pages.

I guess charging him with overstay initially means, that they can detain him (fairly indefinitely), control who visits him, and make their investigation in the murder without having to worry that he will be gone without a trace.

Normally I would also assume, that they would want to find out, how substantial his bank balance in conjuntion with his friendliness is, but as they have already giving a press conference, he seemingly was indeed not "cooperative".

The reports say he was about/trying to board a flight so he would have passed through Immigration and paid a fine. The veracity of Thai newspaper reports is beyond reproach. ????

The shooter is a very bad shot.

That many bullets at close range and he didn't get the job done.

I think the windshield may have something to do with the job not being done.

The guy could have been shooting military full metal jacket bullets that are not that effective as soft points or hollow point projectiles.

Well a good chance of trouble happening with the number of Russians coming to Thailand setting up their businesses

Will no doubt be a few rotten eggs amongst the numbers  arriving Mafia wise ????

Might even be a few decent ones !!
