I was out on Saturday night in Tapas, Silom. I was with a croud of friends between myself and some friends we bought a bottle of Finlandia Vodka which we shared between us. The only other drink I received was a shot of tequila from another friend. Now I go out regularly and drink fairly regularly but on Saturday night after we left Tapas I was a mess and I don't remember anything. Fortunately I was with my boyfriend who took me home by which time I was comatosed until late the next day and subsiquently I have had a splitting headache and nausea until now - Tuesday. Basically I have never in my fairly long lifetime of going out socialising been in this sort of state - falling over tables, unable to stand or speak and complete blackout. My boyfriend was shocked and so was I when I regained consiousness.

None of my other friends that were out were in this state. I've talked to a few people and there has been various speculations about what might have happened.

1. I might have had my drink spiked by someone. If so does anyone know what I could have been spiked with?

2. Alcohol in pubs is replaced with other cheaper alcohol so when you don't drink your normal quota you have no idea what your drinking and you have a mega hangover from drinking such cheap rubbish.

But if it were option number 2 surely my other friends would have been in a state too.

Anyway if anyone has any other theories let me know.

Sunchild, you might be best asking a mod to put this post in the general topics forum.

I know this is the pub forum but it definately isn't "funny" what happened to you.

Why would any of your friends spike your drink? Rohies or GBH is the going thing to spike somebodies drink & unless the spiker was on a "sure thing" why would they waste the time or money to do it, especially with your boyfriend present. I find tale this a tad fishy.

Soundman.

Tapas has been a round a long time and has never had a reputation for cheap/tampered booze especially when you open a bottle.

did you eat?

if no, i suppose I would be looking at the person who gave me the tequila.

or i would ask did you perchance partake of any other party enhancers? Sounds like you got a dodgy bump and instead of keeping you on an even keel it had the reverse effect.

From what you've mentioned - there's certainly a distinct possibility your drink was spiked.

I've lived and worked here fourteen years and have heard numerous reports - too many to recall - of foreigners having had their drinks spiked for whatever ulterior motives.

Check out pattayacitymail.com whic is up-dated daily. It's certainly the MO of a lot of shady and criminal Thais (in the main) that frequent these hangouts late at night.

I think you were drugged judging by the extreme effect it had on you.

No disrespect but it could have been due to jealousy or resentment of you or your social group. Or simply just malicious. Perhaps something was said (among your group) and over-heard that caused offence to someone else!

Perhaps you or someone in your group upset one of the waiters or waitresses or perhaps another patron of that establishment who had some sway and influence.

Whatever.

T.I.T.

Thailand is NOT the totally safe and pleasant place it's made out to be!

I've had something similar happen to me -- once in the Silom are and once in the area where I live (which is non-tourist area and very industrial). Since on both occasions I wasn't robbed, I have never quite figured it out. There are a couple of things:

1. You may have been coming down with an illness that contributed to the whole mess. Nothing like a touch of the flu or whatever to put you in quite a state and it may have been one of those 24-hour things.

2. You may have been 'poisoned', as in unclean ice, water or other contamination that made you ill and thus enhanced the affects--although few natural toxins work this fact.

3. Tired, excited, stressed and a change in what you drink might have done it.

I know the bar and know the area. Drugging is certainly not out of the question, but some of those places have been around a while and they keep an eye on their customers. You might want to ask the owner/bartender if anyone or anything unusual has been happening.

Stay safe, and always make sure you have good friends with you.

It's possible that you were coming down with something--24 hour bug or some such thing. This will greatly enhance the affects of alcohol.

> Could have been counterfeit booze. Fairly rampant here.

Come on, there is no 'counterfeit' booze: there is some small-time bars (i.e. not Tapas) that would refill a Bacardi or Smirnoff bottle with a cheaper brand of rum or Vodka respectively. I see it happen all the time. This of course would not have any major effects on your health or well-being, they're just cheaper brands. And at a place like Tapas, and when opening a whole bottle, it's frankly out of the question.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm with 'Bulmerke' and his thoughts on the situation. I also think that the booze being conterfeit is unlikey but what I'd like to know is what exactly is it that people are spiking drinks with here?

Any ideas?
