Live Update : Will it be Pita?

Not only Thais, but people around world are watching and waiting to see what happens when MPs and senators, in a joint sitting of parliament, consider whether to vote for, vote against or abstain in the selection of Move Forward’s Pita Limjaroenrat as Thailand’s next prime minister.

 

ThaiPBS World will report this historic event from start to finish.

10.15am – Bhumjaithai MP Chada Thaised says that his party does not support Pita as the next prime minister mainly because he and his party continue to campaign for amendment of the lèse majesté law.
“Pita and his Move Forward party have publicly displayed their promotion of amendment and other activities which I consider a violation of the monarchy.” said Chada, adding that several Move Forward MPs are facing charges of violating the lèse majesté law.

 

10.11am – Speaker asks the chamber if there are any more nominations for PM. There are none, so he announces that Pita is the sole candidate for the premiership.

10.09am – House speaker announces that Pita’s nomination as PM is endorsed by 302 MPs.

 

10am – Cholnan Srikaew, leader of Pheu Thai and MP for Nan province, nominates Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat for prime minister.

 

9.51am – The chamber discusses the timeslots assigned to each side, in order to ensure voting starts at 5pm, as previously agreed.The House speaker ensures that the sitting proceeds as discussed and agreed.

 

9.30am – The joint sitting of MPs and Senators begins. House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha provided a briefing on the process for the election of the Prime Minister.

If it had something ...anything.... others wanted then other countries would have stepped right in with sanctions

Well he has history on his side.....IE: 9 years dictatorship...anything? Sanctions? Reduced commitment in anyway? Slightest hint of not doing business with this type?

 

No it is the same as Myanmar....none batted an eye because it is what it is in this type of country that has no beads to trade.

 

The only thing they have a slight amount of is location for China to claim as an ally & that is the only reasons other western countries even talk with them

 

Trust me I would love it if the world did step up/ step in ...In both Thailand or Myanmar

I made the comment because the posting was erroneous to comment that the world didn’t give a toss about Thailand. The 2014 coup drew condemnation from UN, HRC, EU and G7 countries. Trade partnerships were put on hold and military aids were withdrawn from USA. The question that should be posted is whether the punitive actions by the world is sufficient to made a change to Thai politics.

Yes but lip service doesn't count for anything in reality. The answer to the question is a resounding no the punitive actions did nothing to stop the dictatorship.

 

If instead countries like the USA or UK or France etc etc said sorry this is a no go. We will no longer be buying your goods nor will we be allowing banking etc to move through our country to yours...Now that would be something for the old guard to think twice about

My money is not on Pita... Make no mistake, I wish him well, but I still don't believe that they will let him become PM. At least not today,

I tend to agree, perhaps it would have been more productive to keep their mouths closed and wait until Khun Pita and MF were locked into place.

Most of those looking from around the world will be less concerned with Thai democracy, than will there be unrest, violence, riots or a new junta for their expensive holiday - maybe they are looking just to see if they should book a holiday here ?

Numerous archaic articles within the constitutional framework need to be revised or stripped permanently, if one really wants change - otherwise, all moot and rhetoric.

Agreed. Thailand doesn't have any influence anywhere in anything. What happens in Thailand is only of interest to those within its borders.

Make no difference - candidate still has to have about 376 yes votes to be PM regardless (there seems to be one member absent today so perhaps 375 would be accepted?).   Does not look like he will even come close today with all the non votes (about equal to no votes) - but I could be wrong.

No-one was voted in as PM today apparently. It's being reported on live news feeds that Pita fell about 50 votes short.
