NGO says mercy killing of stray animals is strictly controlled by Thai government

Euthanizing stray animals is a sensitive topic in Thailand. It is wildly misunderstood that it is a main tool used in controlling the number of strays. A non-governmental organisation (NGO) has, however, explained that the use of this method is strictly limited, unless the animal has health issues or an easily transmitted disease.

 

A global charity focused on animal welfare, Four Paws International, is working with Thai governmental bodies in Trang and Bangkok to reduce the number of stray animals, using the ‘’Capture, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release’’ or CNVR approach. Sterilising and vaccinating stray animals are significant measures to effectively control the numbers. This aims at breaking the cycle of suffering those animals experience. By sterilising and vaccinating 70% of a given stray animal population, they can manage the rate of reproduction.

 

According to Matt Backhouse, Head of Stray Animal Care in Southeast Asia for Four Paws International, Thailand is doing well in terms of its progressive attitude towards animal welfare. “It’s one of the first countries in Southeast Asia that has animal welfare legislation which, like all legislation, could be improved. Thailand has banned the dog and cat meat trade, which is excellent, and has government engagement and investment in these CNVR programs, unlike some countries which are performing euthanasia for the regulation of the animal population.”

Much more needs to be done to reduce the number of strays. Any dog or cat found roaming the streets should be caught and put down. There are simply too many.

It's total madness to spend time and money capturing, sterilising and treating dogs for disease...then just to dump them back on the street..... 

 

They should house the captured and de sexed dogs and cats in rehomeing centers and put them up for adoption. 

 

Those that fail behavioural tests or can't be rehomed after a set time need to be put to sleep. 

 

In most countries it would be illegal and considered aninal cruelty to be dumping dogs and cats on the street to fend for themselves....but these dog charities seem to think that's fine.  It's idiotic.

 These articles are quite absurd. Nothing is being done to reduce the "stray dog" population in Pattaya. It would help if they used the correct term to define what these animals are. Most of them didn't stray from anywhere. They were born and raised in parks and empty lots around the city, and correctly called "Soi dogs" or Street dogs".

 

I walk in Chaloem Phrakiat Park (Park on Phratumnak Hill) and sorrounding areas 3 - 4 times a week. On my one hour walks I have become very familiar with the around 100 dogs I observe on a 1-hour, 6km walk.

 

These dogs are fed at least twice daily by people who live and work in the park. In the late evenings around 9pm, these people ride arond the park on a motorcycle, dropping food for all their pets. It's not very nutritious food, and mainly just a blob of white rice. Occasionally they get bones. All of these dogs are malnurished and highly prone to infectious and degenerative diseases. I actually feel bad for the dogs, watching them eat their little pile of rice. Just allowing these animals to exist is animal abuse.

 

I took a few months off from my daily walks and just started up again this week. I was astouned at the huge increase of dogs since my previous walks. There were dozens of puppies to add to the population.

 

In my own soi, these dogs are fed daily by Thai people who come along and dump piles of white rice. Dinner time is about 5:30pm. These Thai people who feed them live quite a distance from them, so they ensure we have plenty of dogs to disturb us at night, while they sleep undisturbed at their own homes.

 

These Thai soi dog feeders are really just pretending to look after them, because if they really cared, they would feed them nutritious food. Of course they could not afford that....

 

These dogs should be removed and euthanized. Their life is cruel punishment. If the Thai people want any of them, then they should take them in and give them a good life in their own homes.

 

Please note I'm not a dog hater. I just don't like seeing them live (survive) like this. In my own Soi there is a real stray that has lived outside a condo building for as long as I've been in this street (6 years). I'm sure this dog spends all his waking hours scratching. I've never seen him awake and not scratching.

Barefaced lie and they know it, all it does is slightly reduce the booming birth rate. Soi Dog Foundation have on average done about 100 dogs a day over 20 years, almost useless. Then they release them to continue being pests and health risks and letting them live on suffering, but hey it makes the do gooders think they are 'making merit'. At the same time these people are responsible for the deaths of heaps of cows, pigs and sheep they scoff down regularly. The main reason for doggie status here is not actually Buddhism, or they would not be killing all that live stock to eat, it something else, but that cannot be talked about!

We are talking about millions of strays, not possible to get these enormous amounts adopted, plus most Thais want expensive new doggies to show off, not skanky strays

Does it crap in other peoples gardens while it's out and about????? People avoid strays being rounded up by putting a collar on them, so if kitty has one it would be OK

All cats pooh, the same as you, but unlike dogs, they do their best to bury it, part of their culture.

Thought you would have known that.

In fact, cats must be one of the cleanest pets to have...............????

They just smell so bad, a bit cleaner than disgusting dogs but never had a house home or here without cats stinking the garden out.

But like all cats, big or small, the males leave their scent to mark their territory. I have 2 female cats, so no problems, except between each other....????

Apart from hunting and killing native species, cats can also transmit diseases to local wildlife.

 

The Toxoplasma gondii parasite carried by cats can infect birds and other animals and cause severe health issues in humans as well. This is spread in the cats poop. 

 

Please keep cats indoors or in an outdoor enclosure.

You forgot to mention 'a bird killer and anything that moves. Cats destroy the wildlife.

I have heard they might just dig up a flower now and again but do they really do damage to property.?....Surely relative to dogs, that shxt where they please, splash walls umpteen times a day, kill other animals (cats included), chew up furniture, will pull up your sprinklers and bark their stupid head off at squirrels and other dogs, cats begin to look benign...  mine just lies about asleep all day!

Absolutely, I have outdoor furniture & motorbike seats that have been ripped up by feral cats and the smell of cat urine all over not a nice smell

Pratumnak hill has become over run with the Soi dogs and I am seeing more puppies. There may be a few nice ones, but there a lot especially on Soi 1 and 2 that chase people and motorbikes. I have to be very careful to take my dog on a walk. They gang up all around us. And no they are not friendly. People keep dropping off food so they stay around. Obviously not the people who live around here. Something needs to be done.

My old one certainly did like to stand on the old motorcycle seats and do that claw padding thing, but I put those net covers on and it cured that. Not getting feral cats where  I live, probably the village dog packs take care of them....I still have no idea where my cat does it's business...and it can stay that way. .(your place perhaps).

I don't wish any harm to animals in general other than the ones i eat lol but soi dogs are a massive problem and need to be dealt with properly and if that means getting rid of them permanently then so be it.

Thailand needs to get some balls imo

To be fair they do sometimes do something about large packs of strays. When the mrs was head of the village she had 14 rounded up and got rid of took a while to catch them. Quite pleased I asked her if they had been put down, no cannot they just take them and put them in another place a few miles up the road!

On our property neighbours cats have shredded up our motor bike seats, killed nesting birds, sprayed stinking urine up the walls in our car port and porch, clawed open trash bags making the contents spill out, woke us up at night with their screaming and wailing when they are fighting (which sets our dogs off barking) , and the cats crapped in our plant boarders and vegetable bed (so we have got cat crap on our hands when we are planting). 

 

They have also got muddy paw prints and hair all over our patio furniture seat covers. 

 

We had an aviary in the garden with finches and quails, but the cats would climb on it at night and spook the poor birds, and injuring or killing them through the wire mesh. All the noise woke us up in early hours of the morning so I would go out to chase them off.  I had to give away the surviving birds for their own safety. 

 

One also got squashed by our truck which was disgusting and upsetting to clean up. 

 

We had to spend money on pigeon spikes to put on the garden walls to try to keep them out, but they always find a way in.

 

Cats are very annoying for some people... And cat owners seen not to care in the least if their wandering cats damage or disturb their neighbours property.

That's great News ,Most Soi dogs come under that category.

Now they can go Clean up the country.
