well if anything, the baht should take a nice plunge now

The drop in the Baht happened already do you honestly think that people who make millions out investing in that sort of stuff wait for things to be announced on Asean Now  or mainstream media?

You are too late and have missed out, the baht has been rising all day.

This was always a racing certainty, only very naive people or those who's judgement was affected by dreams of some sort of "democratic utopia" thought otherwise

No we wouldn’t. We’d moan and tut and maybe raise an eyebrow but then the majority would tune into Love Island.

It seems progressive Pita is rather arrogant. Maybe he learned this at Harvard. Time to "move forward" Pita and get out of the way. Your time is up.

If he's arrogant what do you make of Prawit, Prayuth, Anutin and the flour dealer from Phayao with a crooked degree?

Wait until the USA says fix it up or else!

Thailand really doesn't care about what Western Democracies think, except for the limited reasons of trade and tourism. Western Democracies, like the US, care that Thailand doesn't become a puppet of China. That is the balance. The question is what are the next steps of this fiasco. The next domino: what happens to MFP? The Senate has hinted (stated) they won't accept a coalition with MFP in it due to Lese Majeste. Junta is waiting in the wings: the creators of their own narrative to resume control.

He made a critical mistake that he could have easily avoided. No-one to blame but himself.

Threading needles to comport to standards that are set by the people who don't want you to have a voice is hardly a mistake.

As far as I'm aware shares from a suspended company can not be sold, at best they can be transferred to someone who agrees.

I know because I own shares in an ADR of a Russian telecom, which has delisted on the US stock market because of the sanctions, hence I can not sell them

Technically, on American exchanges you can sell defunct shares of stock as "junk" for tax purposes. Capital loss. Not sure about Thailand

I doubt anyone here is actually surprised, sadly.
I remember a friend once told me something that I thought had some good insight as to why Thailand was where it was at the time (some 20 years ago).
He thought the reason Thailand was more or less prosperous through the many decades since mid last century was due to influence (read: politics and money) from America (this is not a pro-America post. I don't believe there are any good arguments that America was there for altruistic reasons). The tens of billions of US dollars (a lot in 1950 money) pouring in to build up Thai military, police, and a bit of infrastructure (and of course lots of VERY fat brown envelopes among the Parliament) from 1950 and ensuing decades did some amazing things, obviously not all with good endings, but it did keep Marxism/Communism, which destroyed much of SE Asia, out. All of this along with propping up/supporting a young man, who had just recently lost an eye and who apparently had a decent moral compass (of course, there are diverse opinions on the matter). With these two major differences, along with many other things (the 1950's and 60's in Thailand was incredibly complex), Thailand escaped the disaster of all the nations surrounding her. These days, those two things are not clearly evident anymore, at all. And the corruption that all of that American "support" brought with it has created a whole other set of problems. This friend of mine thought that the mindset of the Thai is not so different from her surrounding nations, at all. But with these two major differences, they were brought in a different direction. Be that good or bad... these things are temporary and have consequences in many different ways. But, in the end, I don't believe a "democracy" can succeed with an immoral or corrupt people. If education means anything, it must elevate a people beyond Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Sadly, everyone knows the state of education in Thailand.
It is no surprise that "democracy" is not finding success in SE Asia, just as it has had varying degrees of success in the "west". And I don't think it will until the people find their way out of corruption and this begins in the heart. It will be a long journey.

We all have to follow rules we don't like or don't agree with. There are hundreds I think are ridiculous but that makes no difference.

The fact that he couldn't sell them because trading in the company's shares had been suspended is surely relevant, though.

Was that the only option open to him though? Usually politicians put their ill gotten in a wife, sibling or other family member's name..... and even a servant's sometimes.

Abhisit Vejjajiva was born in the U.K., holds British citizenship and graduated from Eton College, Oxford University. He was PM.

Quite a few of the early PMs were educated in the U.K.

The President of the Senate, Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, is a Harvard grad.

Prince Mahidol is a Harvard grad.

"Trojan Horse"? Seriously? Maybe keep workshopping this conspiracy theory. It's pretty lame.

Yes but in those days the universities concentrated in teaching the subjects that people intended to study, now they dedicate themselves to preaching lefty woke political ideology, which this guy has obviously become infected with.

" Ivy league trojan horse" is a very apt description, putting Pita or somebody similar in a position of power, would be the beginning of the end for the Thailand that most of us chose to leave our countries of origin for

So you contend that one single person can bring about ...the beginning of the end of Thailand?

That sounds a crazy.

Where do you see the difference? What do you think Pita was going to do that would destroy your dream?

And you sound incredibly naive. Two years ago with the protests we were one order away from this. Only social media kept it at bay. Kids were beaten badly then as were reporters. Shots were fired by the military on more than one occasion.

Last year there were some very moving memorials and exhibitions across Bangkok to commemorate that many hundreds who have been murdered by the military in Thailand in very recent times. The Rap Against Dictatorship video has had over 100m views. Thais haven't forgotten the dark recent past even if you are oblivious to it.

Dear me. YouTube views and "very moving memorials"............as opposed to not moving memorials?

Some of us dont get our information from the media or from the bar.........but you carry on.

Its a wonder the press go anywhere else for their stories with you around. Chin up!!

Of course, because they are entirely different societies, which is exactly why I am puzzled that most people here want to forcibly impose the UK system (or at least 'democracy') on Thailand. At least for the time being, a patrimonial system will work better here in terms of stability - and stability is almost everything.

The thing about the 'dictatorship' in Thailand that everyone is missing is that it is benign. A country like Thailand that finds itself with a benign dictatorship should rejoice - it is the best possible system for some societies (Singapore was another example under Lee Kuan Yew). It won't last forever though and if/when it becomes malign, then is the time for uprising.

The best outcome for Future Forward (and Thailand) is for them to move to the opposition benches and let Pheu Thai reveal their true colours by joining with junta lackeys such as Anutin and the Democrats.

FF will utterly destroy all these clowns in the next election and will be able to reform Thailand unhindered.

Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Sounds like the kind of wishful thinking of progressives in the US.  "Just keep voting, it will all be fine."  Nope, electoral politics sadly depends on politicians to keep their word.  No, the answer unfortunately is mass civil "disobedience", it's the only message governments understand.  Elections are plainly rigged.  Only a fool believes that a politician is there to help.  Put on a mask and join a protest.  It's all you've got if you are poor.

A personal attack post, which then turned into more bickering posts have been removed.  Stay civil and on-topic.  The OP is not about western universities or why one came to Thailand.

The OP is Pita ordered to suspend doing his duties as an MP

I see trouble ahead.  It may be wise for those that can to leave The Kingdom until matters are resolved.

Unless you live in Bangkok, it probably won't matter one iota what happens,  living in the countryside has its advantages sometimes.

Do you really think they care what the USA thinks? Hasn't, worried them too much lately because they know China will back them. The USA can not go in too strong or they risk the CCP getting more foot in the door.

If it wasn’t the shares it would have been something else.

Yes, they would have found something else to hang him with....such as that video clip of him riding a motorcycle taxi after the election. No helmet, so breaking the law there would be sufficient for the Senate. To say nothing of such behaviour being unbecoming of a PM and making him unsuitable in their eyes. They never needed much of an excuse.

Elections aren’t plainly all rigged. Some are in tinpot countries, in the developed world however, results more or less always reflect the general will of the people.
