They could have invented completely new pronouns, but no - they want to commandeer existing pronouns. It's madness because it's simply confusing. The only explanation is that it's a attempt to shoehorn themselves into the existing scheme, and if that upsets the everyday meaning of things, then so be it. Subverting the normal order - undermining the foundations of conventional society - is one of their defining characteristics. Sure, I'll accept your preferred pronouns. As long as you accept mine. Agreed? Groovy. Cool beans. My pronoun shall be "Massa."

People complaining about this when there are so many incredibly serious issues in the world. Crazy. The problem is: these sniveling little maniacs are telling people how to speak the English language. Like, seriously, how dare they? Language changes take time, you can't shove it down people's throats. That's not the solution to everything, unfortunately. You get to choose your own name, but you don't get to introduce countless new pronouns to the English language and then force everyone to use them.

Having acquired English as my first language in the pre-woke era, I will naturally call her 'she' and it's correct to do so. It's just natural because that's the way we acquired the language. It may be different in a few decades. The English language is free and changes.

Popular Post spidermike007
I think America is the country most infected with this malady. The other day I got an email and on the signature it had her name and after it she/her. Huh? Personally, I despise PC. I think it represents alot of what is wrong with contemporary culture, and especially America today. It is a major form of weakness, when you allow yourself to be easily offended, and take everything personally. Granted, there are things that can be perceived as offensive, but allowing yourself to be offended by tiny little things people say and do is a bit much! But, the people who are offended daily, by things others say, are just weak, and would benefit by growing thicker skin. Life can be rough and caustic at times, and for those of us who have grown thick skin, it is like water off a ducks back. No big deal, at all. Think what you want to think. It just does not mean anything to those with self esteem, and a sense of who and what they are. Granted, these are just my opinions, and some will take offense to them. LOL. The notion that political correctness has “gone mad” is familiar to anyone who follows even vaguely any aspect of modern political or cultural life. The phrase, ostensibly referring to language or action that is designed to avoid offence or harm to protected groups, has become a sharp criticism. It is synonymous with a sort of cultural McCarthyism, usually committed by the left. https://www.economist.com/open-future/2018/09/10/has-political-correctness-gone-too-far A Rasmussen poll found that 71 percent of Americans think political correctness is a problem today. When is being politically correct more about civility and politeness? When when does it veer into censorship? When is it justified? When is it not justified? https://www.jacksonville.com/opinion/2016-09-30/has-political-correctness-gone-too-far University of Connecticut officials sent out a campus-wide email advising its students that the school would provide counseling sessions in response to political commentator and Harvard Law alum Ben Shapiro’s slated speaking event at the university. The ironic part is that the counseling sessions were offered before Shapiro even stepped foot on campus. When I was in law school, Bill Clinton came and spoke. While I wasn't traumatized, I wonder whether the administration would have provided counselors for all the women in attendance. https://clclt.com/charlotte/pc-culture-10-times-its-gone-too-far/Content?oid=16059883

Popular Post blackcab
The issue as I see it, is that pronouns (he, she, they, etc.) are normally used when the person is not present. When the person is present you would normally use their name. What this means is that a person who wants you to use their preferred pronouns wants to compel you to use their choice of words whenever you are not in their presence. Not even most governments compel you to use words that are not your own choice. As such preferred pronouns are always going to be on the opposing side to people arguing for their own US freedom of speech or EU Article 11 rights. 3

Myran
What on Earth are you people on about? "Singular they" has been used for hundreds of years to refer to people in (you guessed it) singular. It's not some recent invention of the woke movement, as you seem to think. The fact that you thought it was incorrect really says alot about your English skills. 1

The singular pronoun They is used when the subject has been introduced but the sex has not been identified. " They " as a singular pronoun is used in spoken English regularly , and is recorded in literature from 18th , 19th century. 1
