Pheu Thai Holds Talks with Move Forward

BANGKOK, Aug 9 (TNA) – Pheu Thai leader Cholnan Srikaew and Paetongtarn Shinawatra have led the team to hold talks with the Move Forward party for the first time after it broke away from the MOU of the formation of the eight-party coalition and sidelined the Move Forward party.

 

The Pheu Thai team, also comprising deputy leader Phumtham Wechayachai, secretary-general Prasert Chantararuangthong and party-list MP Suriya Juangroongruangkit walked from the Pheu Thai headquarters to the nearby Thai Summit Tower Wednesday afternoon.

 

It is expected that Pheu Thai will ask for support from the MFP to vote for Pheu Thai candidate in the next prime ministerial vote to break the political deadlock.

They don't have any shame... As soon as in the first round Pita was rejected, they stood up to take over. Not waiting till the verdict of the CC. Now they are coming back to beg their support of course as they know it will be difficult without them. As MFP is wise , they stay aside now and let PT fail...

Not let PT fail. Let them be successful in what Thaksin has been busy negotiating with Pravit for the last two years.

I'm an MFP supporter but I think many of the commentaries here and on other OPs are mistaken in assuming that the processes that would follow an election in The Wunnerful West where NOONE won a majority (ie 50% +1 of the seats in the Lower House) would be much different from here - all parties jostling for position, largest party gets first try, if that doesn't work 2nd party gets a go ...

 

Of course the Senate issue is different here but that's mostly a problem in appointing a PM, not in daily governance.

 

So what happens in The Wunnerful West when it turns out that NOONE can form a majority government? The new Parliament is dissolved and the pollies go back to the electors for a 2nd round of voting. And that is what should happen here now.

 

My main point is that all the stuff about MFP being done down despite them 'winning the election' is nonsense. They won the largest number of seats of any party in the Lower House but not a majority. I hope they'll win a clear majority when the next election is held.

I am wondering what will happen if Pheu Thai is the Government and suddenly as they are already untrustworthy start to talk about changing section 112...Would that be accepted??

The senators mean everything here. If the senators had no vote regarding the PM, as is the norm, MF and PT would have been running the government since May.

Assuming MF don't vote for Settha as PM, PT will use this rejection to invite Pravit's and/ or Prayuth's party(ies) to join PT in forming the government.

I think the Senators come the next vote for Pm (PT,s candidate) are in no man,s land....should Mf start voting for the PT candidate are senators going to smell rat and think the so called torn up MOU agreement is back in place? There only safe option might be to abstain ..yet again?

Sure.

As for the cabinet, there will be no need for the military backed parties,

according to Pheu Thai. They reckon they will garner enough support in the house to pass legislation. Even MFP may vote in favour of Pheu Thai  legislation if it aligns with their own thinking.

I don't see that as a bad thing. He is as out of touch as the generals. Thailand will manage without him, I am sure.

I agree. I just don't see the wisdom in joining this so called coalition. Wouldn't it be like giving up on the mission?

MFP do not have to officially join Pheu Thai's coalition (PT won't have them in anyway) but they have choices to make about how they vote as a bloc. Keeping Pheu Thai in power versus allowing the generals back in? Which is worse?

They are playing hard to get and their support will be at a cost. What is their price (I don't mean financially)? They can afford to play a long game, looking 4 years ahead. Good luck to them.
