George Lycas's original 15 minute 1967 student film (Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB), whilst he was at Film School at the University of Southern California is well worth a viewing in order to see the development from student to professional film maker. In fact the US Library of Congress selected it for the National Film Registry due to it's "culturally, historically or aesthetically significance ".

Very much a concept of fiction becoming reality.

IMveryHO, THX 1138 is a masterpiece.

I first saw this film when shown at university (when the film was first released).

This film was highly recommended at the time.

It's still doing quite well..

Even today...

With Big Brother, and with our present-day AI fears, etc.

Tried again a few years ago.

 

Back then films could have no plots and get by. Seemed just a bit too spare to bear the last time around.

Was it not the "spareness" of the film that was one of its central themes?

 

The film definitely had a plot.

Although, the plot may have been difficult for some to appreciate, depending upon various factors, in some cases.

I probably went to see it as I saw a lot of films throughout my life, however it was so unremarkable that I have no recollection of it whatsoever.

A lot of garbage films came out in the 70s. Unfortunately wokeness has turned many films coming out now worse than garbage. The last decent film I saw before I gave up on them was Dune ( the new version ) I hope they make more in the series, but it's been a while.

I think that the fact that it was a George Lucas production is irrelevant, insofar as his fame came after its release.  Crimes or achievements are no less or more for what you do afterwards.

THX1138 is an important portrayal of the brutalisation and suppression of the individual in society, but Elon Musk would say "I don't do that" and so many of us are willing to look away and suffer the consequences, rather than taking up arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them.
Let us condemn the activists that cause the occasional traffic jam, rather than those amongst us that cause a traffic jam everyday...
The fault with stories like THX1138 is focussing on the rebel, with whom we all identify, than the subservient culpable masses, whom we form.
Until we realise that we are the villains in the story, not the heroes, we will never save ourselves.

I'm sure like Blade Runner someone will come along and pick up and expand the theme of the film and that could be pretty amazing with FX at this stage.

 

I'm glad instead of a remake of BL they extended the story.....should do the same with THX-1138...do not remake it, but magnify the world with tech from this time.

 

AI can even animate short films now from 2-3-4-5 photos.

 

I'm not saying tech would make the film but it would carry an excellent story to another level. I'm hoping scifi moves to another wow level with the utilisation of AI.

Although THX1138 was well directed and well produced, the story line was what was important - and not the words of the story.  AI wiill give us a superlative substitute for human thought, which eventually will make "Terminator" obsolete - we will not know that we are subservient to machines, ...
Maybe that will happen in the future, maybe it happened five or ten or twenty years ago.

Where do you get the solid story line from?
Pictures are pictures, no matter whether they are drawn from a syndicated artist, an art student or Skynet.  If you believe that we will believe the stories that AI will tell us, then it is time to take up the hammers and pitchforks of the Luddites and cast the abominations into the abyss, before they do the same to us.   There is no reason to believe that washing machines have our best interests at heart.

I see you thought the Blade Runner sequel was good/ great- I thought it was a steaming pile of horse manure dreamed up to profit off the popularity of the original. However, to each their own.

 

Like you, I like AI generated pictures, but they do spell the end of human artists, IMO. Why pay someone to do art when a computer can churn out anything we like just by interpreting past artists? Likewise with movies, tv etc. The film actors/ writers etc  of America have rightly become concerned about AI, but IMO too late to stop it.

Never mind, as once the military maniacs realise their twisted dreams of autonomous killing machines we are probably doomed anyway.

I agree 100%, but it's too late, IMO. The rich 1% have the way to even more riches, and they have the private armies to keep us Luddites at bay.

I love AI as it produces visual perfection in the same way as an anime movie shows a perfect world devoid of dirt and bad people. Imagine art tailor made to our druthers, and not what some other person likes, and all at the touch of a button.

 

It's not yet perfect as it occasionally provides people with more digits than 5 a hand, but once the kinks are ironed out it's going to take over, IMO.

Alas, IMO that will never happen. Will the masses that live in America or other colonised lands accept that they live on the land of a betrayed people, and will those that drive EVs accept that they drive over the bodies of the exploited in Africa that dug up the minerals that make the car move? I doubt that.
