Non Imm O-A visa return

Featured Replies

My age-50+ friend got a Non-Imm O-A visa from the US DC consulate. He entered Thailand October 10, 2022 and left in June of 2023. He will return to Thailand on September 1, 2023 with a renewed health insurance policy (terminating December 2024 I believe) and a US bank statement similar to the information that he used to get his original visa. Will he be stamped in for the full year, that is, from September 1 2023 until August 31, 2024 ? Does he need to go to immigration for any extension ? Or does all he need to do is start checking in 90 days after he enters? Thanks

Sounds like he will get the full year as long as he enters before the expiration date on the visa sticker and the visa letter says multiple entry and he has the stamped letter from the insurance company.

Once the permission to stay date is stamped in at the airport all that is required are the 90 day reports.

As long he can show an insurance policy acceptable to Immigration at the airport, and the visa's expiry date has not been reached, he will be stamped in for a year. If he wants to leave Thailand and return after the expiry date of the visa, he should ensure he has a re-entry permit to keep his permission to stay intact.

Thanks for the answer. Does he need all the financial info as well? I've told him to have everything just in case but perhaps that's not accurate. I'm assuming he doesn't need to show another criminal background check and the doctor's letter that states he doesn't have leprosy and dengue fever.

No.

Also note that his non O-A visa has an expiry date.

If he does an exit reenter just prior to expiry of his visa he will be stamped in for 12 months.

Note he will require health insurance for that period and be aware that any travel out of Thailand requires a reentry permit.

Can he do it at a land border or does it need to be at an airport?

No. Immigration at the airport will only check the insurance.

I think he will only be stamped up to the expiry of his health insurance. That is what happened to me so I didn't get the full year

Yes, each entry on an O-A visa gives your a permitted stay of one year.

In principle you can get almost two years stay from an O-A visa, by doing an exit and re-entry a few days before the original visa expires.

What date does the original visa expire?  NOT the 1 year permission to stay he received when he entered on 10 OCT 2022.

As long as the original visa is not expired he will get another 1 year permission to stay.
