Scam Gang Targets Burmese Store, Posing as Cops and Extorting Monthly Payments

A Burmese store in Pattaya has raised concerns after being targeted by a gang of men posing as police officers, alleging affiliation with the Royal Thai Police's economic crime division and demanding money to avoid arrests.

 

On August 27th, news broke of a complaint filed by store owners in Pattaya, who sell Burmese products. The gang, falsely claiming to be officers from the economic crime division, conducted fake inspections, coercing victims to pay large sums under the guise of avoiding legal action, reported Daily News.

Some victims believed the ruse and paid several businesses. However, investigations revealed no such involvement of the claimed agency, and the legitimacy of the impersonators remains uncertain.

 

A victim, Mr. Mongkol Thiangkhaem, narrated how he was duped into paying a considerable amount to evade arrest. At first, the gang insisted on a steep fine, but they eventually reached an agreement for a monthly fee ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 baht.

 

This pattern of events was echoed in other cases, leading those impacted to file grievances with the nearby police.

 

Another victim, Miss Orisa Hanchaichai, recounted how the same gang used the threat of heavy penalties to extort money from her for selling Burmese goods without Thai labels.

She eventually paid 20,000 baht, fearing legal repercussions, only to discover later that the impostors were not genuine officers.

 

CCTV footage clearly captured the gang's actions, along with evidence of money transfers. However, the account holder had already passed away.

 

Victims have urged authorities to verify the authenticity of the accused impersonators and take appropriate actions against this deceitful operation.
