Starlink, is it a available in Thailand yet

Starlink needs the approval the the regulatory body in each country before it can offer service (it also needs regional uplink/downlink stations and internet backbone infrastructure since (like GSM in a moving cat), it must pass your signal on from satellite to satellite seamlessly (since each satellite is in low earth orbit and is only 'visible' to your fixed location for about 15 minutes as it passes overhead).

 

You think Thailand will say yes?  Fat chance!  The same goes for Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar etc etc. There is very little reason for these countries to approve Starlink.

The Starlink website has Cambodia and Laos with a start date of 2024.

@Crossy I’m with true and they had to run a cable using the existing electric poles from the main road down our soi to the house, I reckon that’s about a quarter mile, I get pretty good speed but the network often flashes up an ‘ unstable network ‘ message so things like our cctv will sometimes not ‘playback’ because there’s a delay in the signal

I'm assuming our OP has already exhausted the possibility of a fixed line connection hence my use of the word "mobile".

 

If you are having network stability issues, I would talk to your provider.

a quick view at the startlink website did not show me whether available in Thailand

but an estimated cost of €65/mo {2210 baht/month} with a one-time hardware cost

of €450 { baht 15.300}

 

no thanks as I have a reliable fast glassfibre contract for 1 GB/s for about a quarter of this cost without one time costs! but than, I am happy to live in a rural village in the North of Thailand.

Friend of mine just got it in USA. Spent over $800USD and it SUCKS. He is so disappointed. There's also no customer service and no one to talk to. Says it's all online and you're on your own. He's just gonna dump it, eat the loss and go back cable Internet/WiFi.

And why would you need it here. Mobile data coverage is excellent almost everywhere in Thailand at a reasonable price. Knocks the spots off European service providers. And fast fibre is available even in the boonies and has been for several years. Anyway I'm biased against anything that has a whiff of musk about it.

I have a hat here that I will eat if that happens ???? The Starlink website map generally indicates when they have enough satellites in orbit such that they pass over the region in sufficient numbers to provide continuous internet service (typically 15 minutes for each pass).  I don't think that map includes data about whether the country's regulatory authorities has agreed to allow the service.

Many years ago I remember the big hooha about the awful internet service in Thailand when compared to neighboring countries.

 

The reason given was that Laos and Cambodia put their development out to tender internationaly. They were happy with foreign investment and tech.

 

Thailand decided they'd go it alone. They got left behind.

 

You might want to season that hat of yours and pre heat the oven.

I think you are left behind. Thailand coverage for mobile and fixed line fibre is a lot better than many countries in the world. Don't forget your hat on the way out.

Not sure what he's doing or done, but I have several friends on boats in all places globally.....all have Starlink and all are very happy with the service

Yeah just some half baked story and opinion again that says absolute zero. It works amazing and globallly. Also they offer actually even second hand sattelite dishes, making the start price even much less than the 800 dollars too. Monthly price is great too, in Phillipinnes is 40-50 dollars a month or 100 dollars for global coverage (could work here). Only reason its not available to buy directly here is due to the government (again).

Same here, many friends of ours who are on Holiday in Europe with their Campers have Starlink Roaming, and are very happy with it as well.

 

Initial cost was 349,- EUROS (approx 13.500 THB) and monthly costs of 59 EURO (approx 2300 THB) and if you don't use then you can pause the service (this on a monthly basis)

I doubt it will be available in TH any time soon, or even my lifetime.   Took over a decade to break AIS's monopoly.   Don't think the local servers want any more competition.   Especially if better & less expensive.

Starlink obviously isn't less expensive than any isp in Thailand, or actually anywhere in the world. In fact, it may cost about 6 times what a Thai ISP charges for the equivalent.

Maybe you should do some research before you post uneducated drivel in this and most other threads

The reason why it will not be available in Thailand is for xenophobic reasons.

It would be very handy for rural users, as what's available now is sketchy & slow in many places.  If you were to rely on your mobile phone, besides sketchy & slow, it could add up, depending your gb usage.

 

That's why everyone is on their phones at coffee shops & such, free wifi, so they don't exhaust their own plans.

 

Obviously $120 a month wouldn't fit into most budgets, unless needed and used.

 

I remember when it cost 12 baht/per minute to call Bangkok, from Udon Thani, 18 to call USA, AND 36 to call UK.

 

Everything is a work in progress, and for some, it would be beneficial now.
