A decision is due in the coming weeks on the appointment of Thailand’s next police chief with General Surachate Hapkarn, the country’s best-known and loved policeman, asked to submit his vision for the role in writing to the Police Commission overseen by the new government.

From closing the kingdom’s biggest mass murder case to rescuing trapped Thai nationals abroad to leading delegations to foreign countries as well as rooting out corruption within the Royal Thai Police, General Surachate Hakparn has an impressive track record as he seeks the top job.

General Surachate Hakparn who is also known in Thailand as ‘Big Joke’ is in the running to become the country’s next National Police Chief with the incoming government asking contenders to submit their vision for the role in the last week. It follows a reversal of course announced at the end of August when the outgoing government decided to leave the appointment for the new government of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

Thailand’s favourite top cop, Police General Surachate Hakparn, affectionately known as Big Joke, has been to the fore of countless newspaper reports over the past decade or so in a multitude of roles.

If he's intent on stopping corruption he's going to find himself on top of a huge ponzi scheme if he gets the top job.

Corruption is at an all time high in the RTP, and while Big Joke has done his best to cover it up, he certainly hasn't done much to clean it up during his tenure as deputy police commissioner.

He's said to have loftier goals, political. That won't end well for the country.

Why not?

I would rather see him in the position he is in now longer.

He may not be the perfect solution but he is the best thing that they have at the moment

If he gets the job, that would be a big joke indeed.

Other than seeking (and getting) plenty of attention, he hasn't really accomplished anything. They're still finding overstayers who were already around when he famously got "all of them" rounded up. Recently he did some human trafficking suppression in Pattaya, and the day after he left the local police station went back to their normal ways of doing business.

My opinion. Based on reading many, many, many articles.

We're still allowed to voice opinions here, right?

Or do we need to check with you first?

Most "gossip" here has much more than a shred of truth.

Isn't he the one who said that farangs have to pay more to stay in garbage land and high pollution?

Thank you, can be taken with a pinch of salt then!

Obviously, that goes without saying.

Honestly do you just blindly accept anything someone opines about here?

I always assumed that this guy had some enemies in high places that could block his progress. I tend to like people who have enemies in the establishment. I hope he gets it.

Remember a while back someone shot up his car so i would guess he has enemies,,,

Right after we find out how he made it through the ranks, any questionable actions while on the job, and a thorough investigation of all his assets.

I quite like the guy. If you had any negative information or knowledge of his ambitions, I was intrigued and wanted to know a source to read more, and check it out. If you believe my asking for that, is me blindly accept anything someone opines about....perhaps I can suggest the opposite may be more accurate.
