Former prime minister Chuan Leekpai said that he did not endorse premiers PM Srettha Thavisin’s premiership because he comes from a party which discriminated against southern people.

Speaking in parliament during the debate on the government’s police statement on Tuesday, Chuan explained that, as a long-time southern MP, he shared the grievance of the southern people when the Thai Rak Thai party, a predecessor of the Palang Prachachon and Pheu Thai parties, adopted a selective policy by which it would only develop provinces whose people voted for them.

Because of this biased policy of the now defunct Thai Rak Thai party, Chuan said that they did not win a single seat in the southern region as the people there boycotted them.

To quote Groucho Marx.

"Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others."

A bit like Chuan Leekpai (except that Groucho was much much funnier).

He has a good point. The Bangkok government is biased against the South, which is the cause of a lot of misery there.

I've always like former PM Chuan Leekpai. He was steadily building the Thai economy back after the money crash in 1997. His governess was solid and back by good sound financial principles, but... it was too slow and Thaksin came in promising the moon... except for the people in the South. He only had a baseball bat for them. Yes, they were an impediment to progress in the South, but his bullies attacked rather than maneuvering around the lies of the NGOs who were filling the populous with horror stories.

Chuan also stood for election in 2000 against Thaksin and lost. He also stood against Thakin in the 2004 election and lost once again even heavier.

Up until 1997 the democrats were riding high but have gone downhill ever since.

As for the democrats in the south, they had their own homegrown deputy leader in Suthep Thaugsuban for the Surat Thani province.

What a superstar he turned out to be for the southern provinces and the democrat party.

the people will respect that and i respect you for it, a man with integrity very rare in Thailand

Yet one who was, effectively, prepared to go along with (certainly make no public comment or principled stand on) any or all of the coups, shenanigans or gerrymandering which has marked the political scene for the last two years.

It was tongue in cheek, cryptic.

Many principles, depending on the occasion.

Yes, understood.

He has of course secured his place on the list of new Senators! They will need men of principles!
