Kamnan Nok scandal lifts lid on Thai bureaucracy’s corruption crisis

An unprecedented shooting that killed one police officer and left another wounded in Nakhon Pathom province has exposed ugly corruption in Thailand’s police force and public services in general.

 

According to investigators, 29 police officers were partying at the home of Praween Chanklai, a local subdistrict chief known as Kamnan Nok, on the night of September 6 when Praween’s close aide opened fire.

 

The target was Pol Major Siwakorn Saibua, who was murdered after allegedly rebuffing a request by Praween that his nephew be promoted.

 

A bullet also went astray in the shooting and wounded a policeman nearby.

 

With two officers lying bleeding in the compound of Praween’s home amid a phalanx of policemen, the surprise was that the gunman was left free to leave the scene. Even more shocking was that CCTV recordings showed Praween and his aide leaving the house with a police escort – and not in the direction of the nearby police station.

 

The Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand (ACT) was quick to condemn the case as clear proof of failure in a corruption-plagued bureaucratic system.

 

“Without good governance, dishonorable civil servants kowtow and become tools of influential figures,” the ACT said in a statement.

Theses kind of scenes has by far surpassed every and any lawless third world country where the law means virtually nothing if you know the right people, i don't know how Thai people can live with such shame, which doesn't seems to bother them much.

It is obvious that it smells like bribery when so many public tenders are won. The state official gives contracts to his own construction companies. This is the license to print money. And there are many of these corrupt officials in Thailand.

It’s a shame shame - They retrieve the video on the night of shooting which had been thrown into a nearby lake … 

It was a local mafia who controlled both the local regulating Authorities and highway patrol police in the supply chain of trucking. They controlled all the trucks that were doing inter provincial trucking of sand. All the tainted policemen were from Nakhon pathom highway police department. Apparently it has been going on since his father days. 

The killing of the policeman who was sent by Bangkok to investigate them spark an immediate reaction from Bangkok as most of the investigators are now from Bangkok. It is very interesting how they track down the henchman who fled in the middle of the night and was fun down in a gun battle with police from Bangkok in another province. 

 

The said Kamnam is the local district chief - government - who controlled all the highway police - so much power n corruption. In Hk it’s called Government n Triad cooperation.

Who was the last high level authority, in the police, immigration, the army, or the active administration they arrested, charged, tried convicted, and sent to prison? Nobody. Zero. Nunca. Nada.

Heads of villages, influential fathers and police.. all intertwined together like siblings in a cot.

Corruption rules Thailand at every level.

His only issue was he over-played his role as master in the area.

They live with it because it's so endemic and goes far higher than their pay grade...

as the police officer found out it doesn't pay to disagree or say something.

The head man of the area has the police under his thumb... would you speak out?

I don't know why there is such a big fuss. This corruption problem is well documented over decades and has been either ignored or enabled by various Police Chiefs and Prime Ministers. Did you really think this stuff won't escalate year on year? Police acting surprised and outraged, Government acting surprised and outraged. My ass! You got exactly what you wanted.

It's all they've ever known. As for such things not bothering them, I find it interesting that every one of the Thai people I know who have gone overseas for any period of time have not wanted to return to Thailand, once they've seen how things are outside of their cesspit of a country. Not one.

They have found one drive thrown in water, but forensics say they can retrieve the footage on it.
