Pol Gen Torsak to become Thailand’s next top cop

The Police Commission, chaired by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, has selected Deputy National Police chief Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol as the new head of the nation’s police force, replacing Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat, who is set to retire at the end of this month.

 

The selection of the new police chief that was initially the last item on the meeting’s agenda, but it was moved to the top. Pol General Torsak, who retires next year, is the most junior of the deputies, being the most recent to be appointed.

 

The other candidates were Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, Pol Gen Roy Ingkapairote and Pol Gen Kittirat Phanphet. Surachate and Roy did not attend the meeting.

The Police Commission sitting on Wednesday afternoon has decided to appoint General Torsak Sukwimol as the country’s next National Police Commissioner. The decision appears to be a career blow for Deputy National Police Chief General Surachate Hakparn, who up to recently, was tipped for the job. It follows a dramatic raid on the home of General Surachate by officers with the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) on Monday morning, which is now subject to a government panel of inquiry ordered by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

Wednesday’s Police Commission meeting went ahead with the appointment of the 14th National Police Commissioner amid earlier reports of a postponement. There are growing questions on all sides about the nature of Monday morning’s raid on the home of the Deputy Chief of Police Surachate Hakparn with hints of a better rivalry within the force. Throughout 2023, the Royal Thai Police has been dogged with corruption charges against senior police officers allegedly linked with gambling sites with many of those arrests being made by the man in the spotlight on Monday. On Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin called for the partial legalisation of online gambling in the kingdom.

Thailand’s best-known and loved policeman awoke to a nightmare on Monday morning this week at 8 am when his home was raided by Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) officers armed with a search warrant and accompanied by an armed commando tactical unit. The raid came as eight of his close subordinates were arrested linked with a ฿1 billion gambling network operating from Laos known as Minnie’s.

 

The raid is believed to have scotched General Surachate Hakparn’s chances of becoming National Police Commissioner after emerging as the favourite for the role as recently as September 10th when he was reporting to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin at the Prime Minister’s residence, the Phitsanulok Mansion in Bangkok, on the ongoing Nakhon Pathom case into provincial corruption and the murder of a police officer ordered by a local kamnan or headman on September 6th last.

 

On Wednesday afternoon, the Police Commission chaired by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin appointed General Torsak Sukwimol as the country’s 14th police chief. The dramatic swoop on Monday follows months of tension between General Surachate and other officers over the operation and suppression of gambling websites including arrests by a task force directed by him in May this year linked to a site called Foxbet168 which saw the Provincial Police Chief of Chonburi charged.

 

Just days before the Police Commission and the Prime Minister were about to announce the name of Thailand’s next National Police Commissioner, an early morning raid, on Monday morning, for the second time, disrupted the career of Thailand’s favourite policeman, Deputy Police Chief General Surachate Hakparn also known as ‘Big Joke’.

Nothing new here.. The RT police and the army promote people with a short time to retirement so they get an enhanced pension upgrade when they retire. Jobs for the boys!!

Excellent news. Though a general is never the ideal selection for any job, glad the joke was denied. I never bought into his horse and pony show. He jogged the limelight, and the people he went after were rarely convicted. Plus he demonstrated how xenophobic he was while leading immigration. I never understood why he was appointed as a deputy national police chief, after his disastrous performance at immigration and his subsequent banishment. I only hope that he is banished permanently this time. Best to put this toxic  horse out to pasture.

For that reason I was reliefed that he was kicked aside.

Good move it appears the man is politically neutral. It means that there will be a new appointment next year. Big Joke has the opportunity to completely clear his name (or not), the whole debacle can be investigated thoroughly and it's instigators brought to task over the coming year. Then Big Joke can reapply.

Same happens in the UK. When I worked in the Operating Theatres a long serving sister was promoted 2 grades to Theatre Superintendent one year prior to her retirement. The NHS pension scheme is based on a proportion of final salary plus years of service
