I don't want to rent a hotel and just sleep in my tent on a beach. Should I be afraid of police?

I come from Romania and have a lot of experience camping in the forest. I'll be in Thailand for 12 nights.
Thinking setting up a tent on Ao Yon or Panwa beach, washing at sea and eating at 7/11 or street food.

Will I get booted by a policeman or would locals likely shoo me off?

To be honest, DizzyProtos, it might be best to forget that idea. (To put it gently!)

 

I actually admire you for being 'different'. I once had that spirit in me myself.

But while it would not necessarily end that badly......it would definitely not last that long. One night max'.

 

There's no such thing as 'stealth camping' on beaches like those you had in mind. Secluded, forested areas......maybe.....but beaches? Too much hassle. 

 

But if you go for it anyway.....good for you. ????????

Since Covid, Police is more leniant concerning Thais sleeping on the beach. This goes for Thais only. You wanting to pitch a tent on the beach as a Farang? Better look for a very secluded beach with no Police and no 7/11.

Alternative: Thailand has many inland-lakes with beaches. Nobody cares who sleeps there with or without tent. Just buy a couple of fish from the early morning Thai fisherman and you will be fine. With or without tent.

Maikhao beach in north phuket is good for camping and has all what you want. There are also camp grounds.

Camp ground is the minimum standard to look for.

Some organized site.

 

There is overnight camping/sleeping in tents in the national parks.

But I never saw that for the beaches.

On Maikhao beach we had always camping on beach and camp grounds on beach sure for 30 years like phuket camp ground.

You could also rent an old minivan and make it as a temporary home, travel far as you want and explore local lifestyle on your own and stay low on radar. You can get showers at any gyms as well, life is an adventure, just sayin'...

He can stay in a cheap hotel or guest house for a few baht per night and have shower and aircon

Camping sites offer kitchen toilets and showers from 100/150 baht, camping itself is actually trending in th.

It's illegal in Thailand. 

 

Go to Australia and holiday, they like your type, you'll probably be offered social security befefits, free medical etc.

AFAIK there are no laws in Thailand in regards to wild camping. Obviously it is illegal to camp on private land without asking the owner. The beaches in Thailand are owned by the king and are public property.

 

I've camped on quite a few beaches straight on the sand (he'll need sand pegs), in official camp sites of the national parks, and on secluded remote beaches on the south islands.

 

Ao Yon and Panwa are not secluded, there are plenty of hotels there, no facilities and as TiT the owners around may call the police to move him out. Much better to head south to the camp sites of the Tarutao National Park, the camp sites have good facilities and he'll meet plenty of interesting travellers.
