snoop1130
Two adult elephants were found dead, believed electrocuted, near a durian plantation within the Tai Rom Yen National Park in the Kanchanadit district of the southern province of Surat Thani. Wire was found entangled around the bodies of the two wild elephants, a female about 25 years old and a bull, about 40 years old. Burn marks were found on their trunks. The owner of the durian plantation in Ban Kong Tor, Khlong Sa sub-district, who alerted the village head yesterday (Thursday) about the deaths, told park officials that he decided to switch on the electricity connected to the fence to protect his durian trees on Wednesday night, after he learned that four elephants had ventured out of the national park to forage for food in the village. Well there you go - it protected his trees and he did it deliberately. Is this kind of behaviour illegal? 2

Not agreeing with his actions... but then again he is protecting his livelihood. 1 2

I just wondered if it's illegal because I genuinely didn't know, apparently it is. Which means he's in a world of trouble.

Popular Post phetphet
I thought electric fences were supposed to be powerful enough to act as a deterrent, but not enough to kill. Sounds like he just went straight from the mains. 2

The three options available were 'a shock', 'put in hospital' and 'death'. We decided against installing an electric fence. 3 1 1

You can learn quite a lot with just one click 'Pornchai Sitthikaset, director of Protected Area Office 4, said that installing electric fences against wild animals is a serious offence, adding that legal action will be taken against the plantation owner'. 1

Of course this is different, elephants don't know any better, whereas criminals do. That having been said, one does not need a lethal jolt of electricity to discourage animals from entering his property. In fact, my cousin had an electric wire that prevented her horses from wandering off. Also, according to the article, installing electric fences against wild animals is illegal and a serious offense. So, it looks like the plantation owner has gotten himself into a lot of hot water with the authorities.

Sounds like something I've read concerning step-down transformers for drills etc. on building sites; 110 volts = Won't kill you 220 volts = Might kill you 440 Volts = Will kill you

Standard Electric fence units have very high voltage, but low amps. - often up to 8000V , but only about 120 mAmps. This guy obviously used mains electricity - a big no-no!
