Thai tourism hit as gun violence prompts Chinese visitor cancellations

There is so much misinformation being delivered to the media by TAT and the govt regarding tourism. Today I see that the govt is considering extending visas for Russians to 90 days while others have to go through a complicated process to just get a 30-day visa. Reintroduce the 40-day visa on arrivals for most other nationalities and watch the increase in tourism numbers grow. Importantly from countries whose nationals will spend money in the country and not take the jobs of Thais.

One of many reasons to ban guns.

The only people who don't get that and other dosturbing issues are the Trough Dwellers.

Guns are already banned in Thailand. Have you ever seen any gun shops?

Should we thank the young gunman then?    (Sorry, bad taste)

What does the OP photo illustrate?

Much worse than  bad taste. You must think the holocaust is a regular riot. That you would even think, let alone write such a thing shows you to be a calloused, insensitive a------ . Do us all a favor and leave the country.

The Thai government has been urged to tighten gun control measures by Chiang Mai hoteliers and tourism entrepreneurs in the aftermath of the Siam Paragon shopping mall shooting on October 3.

The incident, which resulted in the death of three people, including a Chinese tourist, and injured four others, has shaken the confidence of Chinese travellers in Thailand. The fallout from the incident has seen approximately 60,000 Chinese tourists cancel their trips to the country.

Airports of Thailand’s data indicates a drop in the number of Chinese visitors from 650,000 to 590,000, marking a 9.2% decrease after the shooting incident.

Before the pandemic, China was the largest overseas tourism market for Thailand, with around 11 million Chinese arrivals in 2019. However, this year’s projections are significantly lower, with tourism authorities predicting less than half of that number, or about 5 million, will visit the country.

Chiang Mai, a city that welcomes a considerable number of Chinese tourists, has seen five Chinese airlines, including Juneyao Airlines, Spring Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Sichuan Airlines and Air China, establish routes to the province.

Last week we saw a minister being rolled out saying the impact of the Paragon shooting will not affect Tourism, this week they are saying it is affecting numbers. only Chinese of course.

China has changed to being once again an inward looking country. Public servants (even teachers) now need permission to leave the country and are being limited by time and destination. There is a strong push to reduce foreign interaction.

The article below gives some insight into the reasons but you have to wonder how pervasive this move will be.

Of course it is nothing to do with abductions, scams, a sluggish Chinese economy and real estate sector with huge NPLs on the verge of collapse.

could you please elaborate a little more about what you mentioned? I would be interested to see where you got your information from.

Maybe someone should show those tourists how many people die in Thailand daily in traffic accidents compared to shootings. Then they shouldn't worry about shootings anymore.

Exactly correct.

It's more dangerous to walk, ride, or drive in this country than any other activity.

The drop likely doesn't mean that those Chinese visitors will stop their travels. Just not to Thailand but for a sundry of factors. For example, it is much easier for Chinese group tourists to obtain a visa in Malaysia in 1-3 days for 200 yuan (about 1k THB).
