BYD Seal tips, tricks and help

The browser only works in Park and while the karaoke still works in Drive they have removed the text and the animation that goes with it so you just get the backing track and a photo of the artist, understandable.

The Thai FB brigade are not happy with this and are clamouring to buy an Android box or downgrade the recent update so sideloading or installing APK’s can be enabled.

All so they can have the latest Lakorn on the screen while zigzagging on the highway at 180 !!

We’re just back from a week in Khao Lak.

 

Most mornings I’d walk, by myself, to the car park and drive the car round to the front of the hotel to plug in and top up the battery with a granny charger. Every time I did this, I got a voice, beep and screen warning informing me that the passenger had not put on their seatbelt. There was no passenger; just me.

 

By the time I reached the charging area, the warning had increased in urgency - louder and more frantic. Quite annoying.

 

It’s obviously a fault of some sort. I haven’t remembered to look into this since we got home.

 

Anyone else?

As mentioned in my last post, we were staying in a hotel recently. Every morning there was a serious amount of condensation on the car’s bodywork (and glass). Each morning, I noticed a perfectly defined circle on the bonnet/hood which was completely dry; no condensation at all. Hopefully you can see this in the photo.

 

When I opened the bonnet, the brake fluid filler cap was directly below the circle.

 

Any ideas what was going on?

 

Note: the car had been parked overnight for at least 12 hours.

Do you have "anything" laying in that seat?  Any weight like maybe caused by a granny charger, shoes, bag of something, etc., would trigger the sensor in the seat making it think someone is seating in it.

The magic of dew (condensation) and how small difference in air temperature and a surface temperature can result in condensation on the surface (or not).  Expect there is a "small" difference in surface temperature between the round spot and the rest of the hood with the underlying brake fluid container/cap causing the small round area to be a slightly different temperature (probably slightly warmer) than the rest of the hood.  Probably just a little more heat from the engine/drive area is probably funneled/migrated along the brake field container/cap causing a very slight heat difference on the hood.  And doesn't the Seal have a frunk with certain openings like for the brake fluid container that would focus heat under the frunk to escape upwards out those openings onto the hood?  Nothing to worry about.

I would try thumping the passenger seat a couple of times next time it happens, it could just be a sticky sensor.

A slight possibility exists it could be the seat belt connector.  Check the seat belt connector (the part anchored to the seat....where you plug in the seat belt...the part that you use to release the seat beat).  Look to see if anything like dirt, paper, sand, etc., might have got into the connector causing a funky connection/weird warning when combined with the seat sensor circuity.   Insert and remove the seat belt around a half dozen times which might clear in funky connection.

I received my car last Saturday. When it comes to the driving characteristics of this car, I can't really say anything new and basically only positive things, but on the software side the world looks completely different. Although I was already warned from what I could read or hear here and from other reviews, I was actually already warned and my expectations weren't really high in this regard and at least I had the hope that the last update would at least fix the worst bugs . Here, too, I couldn't report anything new at the beginning. my responsible salesman assured me that this car already has the latest update. Nevertheless, I had to take note of all the defects that had already been reported with this vehicle. I can still live quite well with a silent Google Maps navigator or unreliable parking sensors. With an extremely unreliable and sometimes violently intervening lane keeper assistant, if necessary I could accept it if it could at least be deactivated, but that wasn't ans is not possible. Just like I couldn't deactivate the constantly annoying acoustic warning signals. In my opinion, this is not just a nuisance, but a significant security risk. And in this condition, this car is anything but a suitable travel car. with which you can safely cruise through the country in a relaxed manner! A quick software version comparison in this forum revealed that I was still stuck on an old version. Until yesterday I waited in vain for the last update to finally be delivered via OTA and started to suspect that something was wrong with the vehicle in this regard too. My responsible BYD salesman assured me via LINE that the software was up to date and I could deactivate the lane departure warning system and the annoying warning signals …

 

So yesterday I made my way to the BYD showroom not only to convince my salesperson otherwise, but also to find out why an update was not possible and whether the workshop service could provide me with an update. I was able to convince my salesperson quite quickly that I was unfortunately right about the problems I had reported. Right from the start, the service department seemed pretty erratically and haphazard to me. Here, too, I had to convince everyone again that this car was not on the latest software update. They told me to please wait a bit. They would do this update now. After waiting for 2 hours, the vehicle was returned to me with the message that the latest update was on it and all the problems were solved. As soon as I called up the version number, I could tell that there had been no update at all and that the karaoke app that was so beloved here in this forum couldn't be found. Needless to say, everything was the same on the next test drive with the seller! I told to the staff that I would not take this car in this condition because I consider it a safety risk and I expect the significant defects to be corrected as quickly as possible, including a current update. Unfortunately, my question as to what had been done to my car in the last 2 hours remained unanswered... For me it was too obvious that they were overwhelmed by this problem. We agreed that the next day the top technician at this workshop would work on my car.

 

So instead of my Seal I drove home with a Neta V from Grab. It was very spartanly equipped, but apparently does everything you could expect from such a small car and does not need a constant warning signal or background noise. It was much more comfortable today with my Good Cat, whose really surprisingly good driving assistants in this vehicle category convinced me from the first day. Especially the vehicle lane keeping assistant! But back to the topic, because now there might be something new to report. It took at least 20 minutes to find someone who could tell me what the situation was and what would happen next. And only then when I intervened a little louder in the showroom and pointed out that I would probably have to inform the BYD Thailand headquarters. The same service employee appeared from yesterday who claimed my car had received an update and she claimed this again today and that we could take a look at the car but the chief technician would continue to work on it for about 2 hours. Yes, what can I say, we went to the vehicle together and the old software version number appeared again, and I would have to continue to do without this great karaoke app. Now she told me the problem was that newly delivered cars with a certain serial number and above were not yet receiving any updates from BYD. and the workshop itself could not install any updates. Now the chief technician would try to resolve the problems. I have very big doubts that this will be successful. When asked what was done to my car in the 2 hours yesterday, she openly admitted that everyone was overwhelmed and didn't know what to do. I thanked you for her openness and asked her to continue communicating with me in this way in the future. I assured her that I am not a troublemaker, but that I wanted to solve problems - in this case mine and possibly BYD's too...

My comments may or may not make you feel a little better.

 

I took delivery of my Seal AWD on October 26. After comparing my software with others posted on this thread, I realised that I had an earlier version than everyone else. The dealership were unable to update me; they told me to wait for an alert on my screen.

 

I still have the old software and a few days ago I received the alert in my car informing me that I could perform an OTA update. I am now waiting, as is required, for the battery to be below 20% before I update.

 

With my old software, I can turn off all the irritating, intrusive assistance. I actually have almost all turned off except one of the lane ones. Are you sure you cannot turn yours all off?

My girlfriend suggested it might be a ghost sitting in the passenger seat.

I guessed it's something like this.

 

But I still find it quite surprising, especially after the car has been sitting for 12-15 hours.

I think you are confusing the greater/lesser than symbols.

Sorry that you are having issues with your Seal.

I think the subject of which version we have is confusing as we have already identified 3 different versions on this topic before the OTA update arrived.

Macahoom , as an early adopter, has the first version.

Bandersnatch, who received his car some weeks after, had the second version 

Myself, who received the car Nov 30th , had the third version.

 

Then came the OTA update which should bring us all equal.

 

I believe the lane keeping warnings could be turned off on all versions and continue with the latest OTA update. As can warnings from speed signs , I currently only get a warning when someone is too close ( motorbike or pedestrian) to the car while stopped.

 

My sat nav voice problem was resolved with the OTA update and the parking sensor issue you mention was, I believe, unique to the way I am currently parking my car.

Although I do believe that the lack of parking sensors at the front ( the sensors are more on the front corners ) is an oversight by BYD.

 

Hopefully you won’t get discouraged by the lack of experience from your showroom as the car is truly amazing and I believe all the owners on this thread feel the same.

I have had the same experience a number of times. A little water bottle can set it off, which I think is definitely a fault or calibration issue of the sensor.

 

Removing the object and hitting the seat does help sometimes. If it doesn’t then I would just plug in the seatbelt. I have since bought a bunch of these ‘fake belts’ even for the back seats. Because those also have sensors I believe - and I have a child seat there too…

 

definitely not the solution I want, but bringing the car in with a fault that can’t really be recreated reliably is a pain to show the show room and having the car for such a short time, I’m ok to wait for a necessary service before complaining about this.

 

Maybe an OTA update will fix it?

Regarding turning off the Lane Support System (LSS) maybe the Seal is different from the Atto (which I have)...or maybe it the same/practically the same.  In my Atto I "can" turn off the LSS--and that's what I have done as I got tired of the frequent warnings.   I got my Atto in late Oct when it was running software ver 1.61 and last week it updated to V1.7...both versions allow LSS to be turned off.   "If", repeat, if the Seal LSS is same-same as the Atto then go to ADAS, Driving Assist, Lane Support System where you can turn off (or on) the LSS....and it will stay off until you turn it back on vs only staying off the current ignition cycle.  Yea, the LSS just gives too many warnings on Thailand roads which have all kinds of road markings, narrow lanes, etc.

aahhhhmmm..........missed that one - where did you find the instruction that the battery has to be below 20% for the OTA?

 

Me ignoramus just pushed the button and sailed through the update without concerning myself with the finer things of update pleasures - went without a hitch.  :blush:

He meant at least 20%...a SOC greater than 20%.  He acknowledged his error earlier. Notification of having at least a 20% charge is shown on the initial OTA screen(s).  Like the below image I googled-up for a BYD OTA.

EDIT: apparently you cannot charge and update at the same time.

 

I’ve just updated my software. 66 minutes. No problems.

 

I haven’t taken the car out but I’ve been checking the pedestrian alert sounds in my garage. A few questions:

 

Previously, with my old software, I had the ice cream sound which was very loud. I still have that sound but it’s now very quiet, both inside and outside the car. Correct? (I suppose you can’t comment unless you had the old software to compare.)

 

And I used to have two other sounds both of which were similar to each other and could be described as wind whistling, or the sound a ghost makes. I now have only one other completely new, different sound (“Standard”) and it is barely audible inside and outside the car. Correct?

 

Although I didn’t really like the three original sounds, they were quite amusing and I’m kinda disappointed that the two remaining updated sounds are so quiet.

Yeah I never had the sounds so I can’t really comment but I had read it used to be 3 and now is only 2 which are reduced volume.

I suppose they might be now an acceptable level for those who thought they were a good idea but too loud.

Personally I’m happy they can be turned off.

 

Yup, i imagine there’s a few “ updaters “ who don’t realise the AVAS on/off switch is in a completely different place.

The Standard and Brand switches change the sound of the indicator, not sure any other things are changed with Brand.

NFC is nice but there is a lot of theft associated with NFC communications, you do realise that I assume.

After we failed in our first day's task, our Mazda Cx-3 diesel, which was exactly six years old and had a service history, was usually satisfied with 5-6 liters per 100 km, with exactly 71,000 km on the clock, to one of the many innumerable notorious " tent” car dealer to sell because the “binding” promised price of 350,000 baht from a dealer a week ago was not met, because suddenly this car was supposedly only worth 290,000 baht …

 

So we went on to BYD showroom and here at least there was a pleasant surprise. In fact, the head of the workshop managed to defuse the completely poor options and buggy software to such an extent that I can at least deactivate LSS including its failed warning tones. I.e. either everything on or everything off. Previously it was only ON,-)

I think I can't make any demands in this situation, because BYD would actually have a duty not to let its authorized dealers and, above all, its customers starve on the software front. In my opinion, in this condition the vehicle is considerably safer and therefore suitable for travel, so that we can start our Christmas New Year trip with the seal tomorrow. The other good news is that after the first “cultural misunderstandings”, smiling and lying away problems, which I usually face with a moderately choleric attack, which is my “cultural thing”, our first after sale experience was amazingly good and above all seems the workshop has one/some skilled car mechanics. When we start our trip tomorrow, I will also deactivate TSR completely, because here too, even if I only have SLI “Speed Limit Information” activated, this horrible warning signal doesn't sound as often as when changing lanes, but often enough to turn it off. This means that this noise nuisance is reduced to an acceptable level.

It is possible to take screenshots of the touchscreen. Is it possible to access the screenshots or other data via a USB stick?

 

Finally, thank you again to EVERYONE for the really, really helpful content of this round! If you don't hear from me in the near future, you can assume that I'm completely happy with the car.,-)

Scariest post I have ready in a very, very long time......... My science background had me absolutely convinced that there is no such thing as ghosts, but if you have heard them, I will revisit this believe of mine.  :crazy:

I just noticed I am sitting here with sweat of fear running down my forehead, time for another blond one............ :burp:

Yeh. It definitely sounded like a ghost and I really miss it.

 

To be clear: it was a ghost sound and not at all like a banshee.
