BYD Seal tips, tricks and help

So, set up the auto on and auto off options and also the pin to drive 4 digit option.

With the remote control:

You unlock the car and it only starts when you open the door.

Put your foot on the brake and the keypad pops up for your pin .

Put in your pin and drive away.

Stop the car.

Open the door and exit the car, the car only stops when you lock it.

With your phone:

Strangely enough, if you use your phone ( digital key ) the auto on/off function works as above but it doesn’t bring up the pin keypad and you can drive away without any PIN number !!-

Haven’t tried NFC but suspect will be same as phone !

Will take a while to not press the stop button when exiting but it doesn’t affect anything if you do .

Thanks for posting, just have started my ones as well. The Download has taken not even 5 minutes and has started with the Installation now.

As have noticed before with OTA downloads the estimated time is usually much longer than actual time taken and quite erratic.

I checked mine after 34 minutes and it said it still needed 91 minutes !!

Checked 30 minutes later and it had finished !!

The 99 minutes guesstimate probably came from BYD China experience ( download speed ) as I have noticed Aus, UK and EU all quoting the same time.

Forgot to check out if route planning is available in the Navigation app or see if there is anything new in the BYD store.

Another change is to the volume of Vehicle Prompt , seat belt warning, indicators etc.

Changes the indicator quite a bit, you would have to be deaf to put it on high ?

If I wouldn't know any better, I would claim BYD reads our comments........

This is one of the complaints I made about the consumption screens - I am very happy to see that the graph has grown in size to become much more useful. It would be even better if BYD could explain to me what the Y-axis from -X to +60 means?

So, had another look at stuff on the info screen just now as it is quite different, some symbols have changed, descriptions have changed, layout is different ( wouldn’t say better just different ).

For example:

The car symbol, bottom right, has gone so now use the generic gear symbol ( settings  ) on bottom row to enter all the pages.

The general a/c page shortcut has gone from Home Screen but you can put one of the a/c adjustment symbols on the bottom row to access a/c settings.

For example, I use this:

IMG_6655.jpeg.07602956bbf6ad8f7a9b438c23b4aeba.jpeg

It shows you where your air is directed and also opens the settings page.

In general they have tidied the Home Screen and made shortcuts available on the bottom row.

Incidentally, you can move the bottom row symbols within the row as well as deleting or adding, long press to highlight then drag

i.e. my Home Screen symbol was far right and obscured by the steering wheel.

My Home Screen:

IMG_6654.jpeg.84ed909f5d6f0cf0f59c005c5a121d5f.jpeg

First thing i did was remove the rear demister symbol, hit it by accident in a previous car …. have you ever wondered why you see all those bubbles on rear car windows film ??

Checked out the BYD store as some new additions:

IMG_6648.jpeg.5434c6b3e0dffbfba8fb0b169384930e.jpeg

The arcade has some simple games , tested one out but couldn’t exit !!

You have to swipe down to bring the bottom row briefly.

IMG_6651.jpeg.57de7cebeb0ff7f1aa0624ede96abd5f.jpeg

Suppose this will apply to other pages also, swipe down to access bottom row options if not shown.

The Calm Radio app is a Spotify type app with a nice interface ( which can be changed ) and a good selection of music.

IMG_6652.jpeg.4c6da5c89828b91c07abec8caae0d376.jpeg

YouTube opens and plays okay, only in P gear as expected but i agree with this, YouTube is handy while charging but a definite hazard while driving, imho.

These latest additions to the BYD store can be moved to Home Screen if desired.

Finally, the Navigation app has a new look and a route planner has been added.

An example:

IMG_6653.jpeg.e20c63d7a95b84b564289c398ddda8e2.jpeg

Of course how reliable it is is another question .

I am willing to give it a try as still find it preferable over the CarPlay Google maps.

So, the PIN to drive keypad only appears when using the remote, when using your phone, as a Digital Key, or the NFC card the keypad doesn’t appear and you can drive off without entering a PIN.

In reality the system hasn’t changed for Phone or NFC and only improved for the remote control entry ( despite some netizens getting outraged on FB ! )

Note: when using an iPhone ( can’t speak for Android ) you should disable the option that allows you to open your car without unlocking your iPhone anyway.

For those using the Auto on/off and PIN to Drive functions what are your thoughts. ?

Mine:

The Auto on makes sense as the car is already booted by the time you sit down.

The PIN to Drive is a good addition and increases security ( albeit only for the key fob user )

The Auto off feels strange and I think is unnecessary !, while i tested the different key options a few times in my carport it felt like it would be good ( even though i automatically pressed stop without thinking a couple of times ) but in reality ( stopping after driving ) i don’t see the benefit.

You have to press P before releasing the brake ( otherwise the car jumps forward, believe me ) so might as well press Stop.

Okay, so I might get used to it but it feels so unnatural to leave the car enabled when getting out I would rather just stop it.

You have to experience it to understand what I mean but i think i will disable Auto off unless anyone can give me a reason why it is an improvement.

Didn’t the MG4 have this feature @JBChiangRai ?, what are your thoughts especially as you are driving other cars also .

The MG4 doesn’t have auto on, you’ll have to pump the brake pedal and quite often you have to wait for a few seconds and do it again.

The auto Off feature is mostly great on the MG4, where it’s a bit of a pain is if you’re wanting to unload the car. My daughters come back from Chiang Mai and the car is loaded to the guns with dogs and stuff.

On my BYD, I found a pin to start option, but I didn’t find the auto start, but I like the idea of getting into the car and it’s already on.

Auto on/off on the Seal is:

Settings ( gear emoji ) on bottom row.

Vehicle on right hand list.

Comfort Driving.

So, I’ve never been a huge fan of the 3 large icons on the Home Screen but today, while clearing up some of the subsequent icons pages i realised you can delete them ( long press then drag to the bin symbol which appears above ).

Obviously they don’t disappear from the system and can be found on the subsequent pages in smaller format.

But it does open up some new options, your wallpaper of choice can be shown in its full glory without obstruction and you can still access the former large icons on the 1st swipe left page, placed on their own if you want.

Or just remove the large icons not worthy of Home Screen !!

IMG_6668.jpeg.7ab2fb3856a744a086feebce0a547098.jpeg

Unfortunately the smaller icons can’t be dragged onto the Home Screen ( or if they can let me know how ) which is a shame.

Previously my large icons were; Navigation, Spotify and Calm Radio ( recently replacing the now defunct GBox ) in reality only Spotify gets used frequently.

Now Navigation can be placed on the bottom row ( Star Trek symbol ? ) and, as I said earlier more frequently used icons can be arranged on the 1st page to the right, i have the option to change the Home Page more to my liking.

So, should i go with a family photo, favourite football team, Hooters lineup ( not brave enough ) cat photo or just a stunning landscape ?

What to fill this space with ??

I just set Auto On and Auto Off.

The former saves time as it’s ready to engage Drive when you sit down and bypasses the delay from pressing start to being able to drive.

Auto Off is largely redundant as I will continue to manually switch off, but it’s good to know it’s there if I forget.

Same here, didn’t like Auto off, no benefit and probably confusing if you drive multiple vehicles, easier to just hit Stop.

Seen some complaints about the PIN to drive keypad being a bit unreceptive and i agree, probably get used to it though.

I won't be using PIN to drive, I don't have a need for it.

I would prefer to see a PIN to set/unset valet mode which would limit the power to (say) 60hp and max speed to 40km/hr.

Someone just made a valid point on FB , if you enable Auto on you should also enable Auto off ( even if you continue to press Stop ) because if you don’t and open the car just to retrieve something it will not shut off when you lock it ( kids are always leaving a phone or charger in the car !! ).

Just tested it and it gives you the warning ( horn )so I will enable but continue to press stop also.

Thank you @motdaeng for the ground work. 🙂

I bought the bug screens for the Sealion 7 that just clip in.

Decently made and fit well. Nice.

Probably take them off when I go to BYD for service as they may say they void warranties.20250529_104110.jpg.c8954809bb0fcb7e9a808b0943aebfa1.jpg20250529_104331.jpg.103f60fcb1f1bcb7ee19a6ae2cecdbe4.jpg20250529_104336.jpg.66fe7cb6dc048059d554207250cad9b0.jpg20250529_104425.jpg.d6c74e5e3999598d69d7328032582b3b.jpg

Since you mentioned ICEV today the wife and I in our BYD Atto are a few cars behind a large ICEV truck where we were making a U-turn.  The ICEV truck was blowing exhaust smoke pretty bad and I expected the my BYD infotainment system PM2.5 detector to display around 300 to 400 as up until the today the highest it had displayed was approx 425 when driving behind another ICEV truck blowing black smoke on an open road.

But today since the U-turn was partially under a bridge and also having some high embankments when exiting the U-turn the truck's exhaust was kinda trapped/concentrated and the Atto's PM2.5 indicator reached approx 925 (yes, nine hundred twenty five) for a few seconds before falling back to around 40 over the next 20 seconds or so once the truck was on the open road and several hundred meters ahead of us.

Due to the Atto's PM2.5 filtering system the PM2.5 indication on the "inside" of the car only reached 9 (when it was 925 outside behind the truck) before falling back to around 5 to 7 as the truck got further away from us.

Yeap, saw a PM2.5 reading of 925 today for a few seconds behind that smoke-blowing truck that definitely needed some engine repair.

And now I know how high the BYD PM2.5 indicator will read...peg-out so to speak....it reads a maximum of 999 as approximately one week ago I was behind a small pickup truck that caused my PM2.5 indicator to max out at 999.  Don't know how high actual pollution level was as being behind this truck was like being in a black smoke screen being laid by a ship during World War II.   The reading was at 999 for approx 10 seconds before it started coming down as I slowed down to let the truck get way ahead.

Thank goodness for annual vehicle inspections where this truck will surely fail the inspection.  😜😀:goof:

An observation, in case you hadn't noticed it.

You can lend your car to someone else, and they can charge it to 100% with ReverSharger plug and charge without needing any app.  You'll get a notification on your phone to pay within 24 hours, at the end of the charge process.

I'm not sure about stopping the charge process before 100%, maybe there is a stop charging option on the car's infotainment screen otherwise you would need them to scan the QR Code on the charger for you to stop it.

Does anyone know if it's possible to put the ventilated seats option back on the bottom bar of the display?  It's the one I use most often.

Seems like the old function has been changed for this one now.

Some have changed, the car symbol is now the settings ( gear ) symbol on bottom row and the quick access to the air con page has disappeared, been replaced with the directional air flow ( to the right of Home Screen button on my photo above) button.

All in all a clean up of the Home Screen and more options on the bottom row.

So with the recent update on the BYD Navigation i decided to give it another try.

According to some reviews ( in Aus at least ) the search function within the Navigation now has Google Maps integration, and has a symbol in the search bar to back that up.

IMG_6731.jpeg.4e2abdc9f327d1f41961c804c7310533.jpeg

Well my Navigation search bar has no Google symbol so I was dubious that it had improved in its ability to actually find an address !

Luckily the opportunity arose as number one child needed to go to an address close to home.

Typed the address in and instead of offering some suggestions it said it couldn’t be found before getting halfway finished.

Brought up trusty ole Google Maps and as usual gave us the route before we could finish typing !!

So, dismayed, yet again, with the BYD Navigation, really thought it was going to become usable this time ( yes, I am that naive ! ), probably will work for guidance to a major city but anything more detailed than that it is advisable to use one of the available alternatives !!

i like his videos. his videos are informative and, most importantly, honest without hiding any weaknesses of his ev.

he owns the byd sealion 7, just like i do, and i agree with his view ... every car has room for improvement, no car is 100% perfect.

overall, in my opinion, the byd sealion 7 awd is a great car and i love to drive it ...

@motdaeng

Thanks for above video and yea, this guy seems to provide down to earth videos.    I think his 7 minute video below doing a quick overview of the Sealion 7 is very good....down to earth.    And just for others listening in the video below is "not" saying "don't buy the Sealion 7 but just saying don't buy it if certain things are very important to you which could be said about any vehicle as people have different wants and desires.

Appreciate if you can your share your experiences with the sealion 7. The dealer told me software is an issue for this model  and also be prepared to wait longer for spare parts as it is currently imported .

I test drove the awd version ( no premium to test drive ), I am leaning towards awd anyway  ( only 100k more ) but online reviews indicated that the premium was preferable , drivability /control and non overpowering unlike the awd performance which has dual engines 4.9 sec.

I appreciate your inputs. Thanks

I have the AWD version and love it. Such an easy car to drive.

The reason I went for the AWD version was mainly for Wifey. The car we had before was a 2WD Honda SUV, very nice but under powered. A couple of time wifey has been stuck overtaking and not enough power to accelerate out of trouble, bit dangerous, but with the Sealion 7 (we drive in Echo mode) just put your foot down and you can safely get out of trouble.

I’ve covered just over 13,000km in my SEAL AWD and will be checking out tyres this week, they’re ready for a change.

I’m contemplating jumping up 2cm in width as the aftermarket wheels are wider than stock.

I would like foam-filled noise reducing tyres if I can find them.

i've now driven over 7,000 km with the byd sealion 7 awd. for us, it's a family-friendly suv that also offers a lot of comfort on longer trips. the interior feels high-quality, and the space gives the impression of a premium vehicle.

i'm not a race car driver, but i do enjoy driving a bit sportier from time to time. some sealion 7 owners replace the shock absorbers for better handling, personally, i don't think that's necessary. the 530 horsepower isn't really necessary, but it’s fun and adds to the driving experience, even though we almost always drive in eco mode ... for me, the rwd version was never up for discussion, the temptation to buy a performance suv at this price was just too strong ...

the software still has a lot of room for improvement, that’s not just true for the sealion 7, but for all byd models. features like camp mode, dog mode, a more accurate consumption display, or the option for one-pedal driving are still missing ...

the safety systems can be adjusted individually. sometimes, they respond in a surprisingly strong and sudden way. you have to figure out for yourself what is necessary and useful. eg. i don’t use the adaptive cruise control (acc), since i rarely drive on highways with clearly marked lanes ...

in the city and at speeds under 80 km/h, energy consumption is low and really good. but at higher speeds or during sporty driving, it noticeably higher compared to similar vehicles ...

there are definitely some alternatives to the byd sealion 7 that offer better software or more luxury (but for a higher price as well). but for me, this car is exactly the right choice ...

I order 4 of Michelin Pilot Sport 5 at 245/35/R19

A tad over 10,000 baht each.  They told me 255 Tyres are not available in my size.
