4 Ex-Cops Get 5-Year Prison Terms for Extorting Taiwanese Celebrity

BANGKOK, Nov 8 (TNA) – A court has sentenced four former Huaykwang police officers to five years in prison each for their involvement in a scheme to extort money from a Taiwanese celebrity and her friends, claiming they possessed e-cigarettes.

 

Today, the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases handed down its verdict in the criminal case, involving six police officers.

 

This high-profile case dates back to early this year when former Huaykwang police officers set up a checkpoint to demand money from a Taiwanese female celebrity who was traveling with friends from Singapore.

This happens day in, day out.

The reason these crooked cops got busted is because they extorted a celebrity that made headlines in her country.

Thailand does not and cannot afford negative publicity especially when tourism accounts for 18% of Thailands GDP.

Yes it does happen all the time but this is still a big deal. Don’t want Thailand going too ‘normal’ but perhaps a precedent of things to come.

It's good to see that the cops behind this extortion were prosecuted and sentenced to jail. I remember some years ago being stopped and asked questions by cops and frankly, I didn't like it. It was so obvious they were fishing and look for an opportunity. It would be nice if this case is noticed by other cops and they think twice about extorting foreigners, lest they too be charged with extortion and end up in jail.

It usually takes ten years for the Thai Justice Department to snap into gear.  Of course there are the numerous appeals to come.  Do any RTP miscreants ever do jail time or are they all confined to Inactive Posts?

If this is true, or holds after several appeals, they will have to build more jails to hold all the corrupt RTP.

I read today that the number of Taiwanese, Chinese (and Indian) tourists visiting the LOS is far smaller than predicted - even with the Visa Free policy in place.  
 

TAT are blaming it on “lack of flights”.  My sister in law who lives in Shanghai flew in the other week on a half empty plane.  My wife flew up and back to Taipei last month and the same occurred.   
 

I flew to Brisbane and back Via Singapore three weeks ago for family reasons. Planes were 100% both directions.  This is regularly the case and flights to Thailand from Australia are bloody expensive and still 100% booked. 
 

I think we “White” Farangs understand that there is always a chance we are “fair game” once we leave our native shores.  That’s part of the adventure. 
 

Whilst corruption exists in China (I know I lived there for 4 years before the LOS) the Chinese know how to deal with it and accept it (like the Thais here).  
 

But away from home such overt actions as described above plus the litany of bad press that’s come from Thailand since the re-opening have made an impact on Chinese/Taiwanese Social Media.
 

It beggars the question then - why Thailand is so focused on North and South East Asian tourists and not “Western” markets like Australia where demand exists? Anyway my two bobs worth.

Won’t be surprised if next month they get pardoned after all the man in the police hospital got 7 years off his 8 year sentence maybe they will be lucky enough to get a free helicopter ride if they all fall ill I presume as ex police they are entitled to be treated at the police hospital !

Presumably they will appeal and keep out of jail indefinitely. As long as the agreed share of takings went 'up' they will be taken care of as the case fades into obscurity.

Early on in this scandal, the police were pushing back, along with quite a few members here, saying this did not happen, or that Ms. An was guilty, or lying, or exaggerating.

There cannot be "several appeals", only one to the Appeal Court or, at a push, a final one at the Supreme Court (very unlikely).

Don't they teach about rhetorical questions in 'Pool?  Joe was the exception that proved the rule; look how long he got away with it in the face of incontrovertible evidence of 'unusual wealth'.  It took a death in custody and a police video taken by one of his henchmen to convict him.

In our 13th year here in our Chanthaburi town and last new year I was invited to coffee with four of them at an Amazon cafe.

 

They even paid for my drink and cake, in exchange for my photo with each of them 

 

Been worried ever since, sure they're up to something.
