Chinese police presence in Thailand a “slap in the face” : ex-NIA deputy director

Former deputy director of National Intelligence Agency Nantiwat Samart has questioned the concept of inviting Chinese police to join their Thai counterparts on patrol in main tourist provinces, ostensibly to boost the confidence of Chinese nationals in Thailand.

 

In his Facebook post today, the former spy chief said that he wonders who initiated the idea. He asked whether the idea is rooted in fear or is a joke, adding that if other foreign tourists want their police to do the same, will the Thai government allow them to do so?

 

He went on to say that allowing Chinese police to operate here amounts to a slap in the face to the Thai police. “Are the Thai police that bad?” he asked, adding that, if there are insufficient police to provide protection to Chinese tourists, the logical way to solve this problem is to increase Thai manpower or to ask local officials to help the police.

Top cop rejects presence of Chinese police in Thailand

 

 

The national police commissioner has opposed the concept of inviting Chinese police to patrol with their Thai counterparts, ostensibly to increase the safety of Chinese tourists.

 

Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol said the idea could not be implemented because it involves national security, adding “I disagree with the idea as it would infringe upon Thailand’s sovereignty. Thai police are quite capable of taking care of Thai people as well as tourists.”

 

He also denied reports that it was the Royal Thai Police’s idea to conduct the joint patrols, explaining that “Reports that it was the Thai police’s initiative may have been a misunderstanding. What we have proposed is the setting up of a coordination centre with China, so that, when there are crimes related to China, we could exchange information about suspects and cases,” he said.

Police Chief rebuffs reports of Chinese Police being deployed to Thailand to protect tourists

The Chairman of the State Security Commission Rangsiman Rome (right) with General Torsak Sukwimol, the Royal Thai Police Chief, on Monday after a committee hearing. Both men appeared shocked by reports of Chinese police officers being allowed to operate in Thailand to assist with the security of Chinese interests and tourists.

The proposal to allow the presence of Chinese police in Thailand will open up a hornet’s nest for Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin if it is allowed to go ahead, with the National Police Chief appearing stunned by the proposal on Monday.

The embattled government of Srettha Thavisin found itself embroiled in a sticky controversy over national sovereignty on Monday after reports emerged that the PM, at a meeting at Suvarnabhumi Airport, had approved the operational involvement of Chinese police on Thai soil to boost security for both Chinese interests and tourists in the kingdom. The report received a swift rebuff from both a House committee Chairman, MP Rangsiman Rome of the Move Forward Party and the Head of the Royal Thai Police, General Torsak Sukwimol, who was appearing before the parliamentary body on Monday. In the meantime, a clarification from government spokesman Chai Wacharonke that Chinese police will not be patrolling Thai streets has done little to assuage concern over the matter.

Controversy appears to have blown up between the government and the Royal Thai Police over a reported verbal agreement by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Monday to allow Chinese police to operate in Thailand to improve the security situation for Chinese tourists.

Exactly my sentiment from yesterday, what can the Chinese police do that the Thai police can't? to me, Chinese police equal to Chinese spies and a slap in the face of Thai sovereignty and capabilities to police their own country...

Will the co-ordination centre be based in existing Chinese "diplomatic and trade missions", will they have field agents, powers to initiate and conduct investigations into persons who interest them, no doubt " jointly" with Thai police. What will happen when/if apprehended and whose justice system will deal with them?

 

I suspect that this would be of much greater interest to the Chinese than the token presence of a few bluebottles in tourist areas. That however would establish a useful and visible reminder and legitimacy for a Chinese Police presence. The real game is affecting control over a large Chinese expatriate and ethnic emigre population, one with significant economic and political power.

I'd love to see some UK Bobbies on patrol in Pattaya, working nights & weekends staggering the Thai police who do neither.  There'd certainly be fewer deaths on the roads.

I sent this to a friend in Canada who is married to a Hong Kong lady.  This was his response...

 

Does not boost the morale of Chinese on holiday but rather serves as a mechanism of returning them to detention on the Mainland.

 

We have had the issue of Chinese “Police Stations” in Canada which have been used to bring “wayward” citizens home.

 

My neighbour was Mainland Chinese and suddenly disappeared last Autumn with no notice and is now back in China. I spent last Winter shovelling his snow.

The ex spy chief, and police in general can moan and groan all they want ,until they are told to be quiet or else. This government is not a democratic elected government. And, it is clear the Chinese and this group are in step. People here are talking like the government in Thailand was elected, and the people have a choice. 

I don't see where the people of Thailand have a choice in the matter. And I doubt the government cares what they say. Until they decide to come down on them to keep them quiet.

The rest of the world is waking up to the fact that Thailand and China are one in the same.

Expats and tourists from the west are in for a rude awakening. Lots of broken families and expats leaving with nothing more than their shirts. 

Just threaten these guys with a loss of pension and they will fall in line faster that you can say " cat in a hat ". As far as western expats go they will keep adding things where it is basically impossible to stay if a westerner. 

 

And with a little propoganda, the general population will turn against anyone from the west .  That has been in the works for a few years now but quietly. All they would have to do is start a massive anti western campaign and the Thai people would get rid of the expats.

The Chinese are not interested in us, they are only concerned with exerting control over the significant ethnic Chinese expatriate and emigre population, and of course the infrastructure they are planning (to the benefit of China.

 

The Thais are only interested in us as a source of income which funds an element of their immigration police reasonably satisfied, both formally and informally.

For a country and society hell-bent on 'saving face', they will be stripping it off without any help if the Chinese police are allowed to 'operate' in Thailand. But, to answer the other question, yes the Thai police really is THAT bad, and that's putting it mildly. The logical was to solve the problem is not to increase Thai manpower, but to fire the ENTIRE force and replace it with a new one. Mission impossible, it is.

I am amazed that sovereign country is now going to get help from another country in the way of police or maybe just wanted a man’s China made and the new Prime Minister sounds like a perfect way to get spies into the country. It’s hard for me to believe all this stuff. THT.
