People here equating electricity prices in other countries to those in Thailand without comparing them to what people earn here and over there which where the crux of the argument lies...

If I recall, is part of this issue also tied to the repayment of loans that were taken out in part to subsidize prices earlier?

 

I recall discussions about how that was going to be repaid etc etc

Inflation figures anywhere are nonsense, because only some things are included in the calculations. Something that has increased by 1% might be included but something else that might have increased by 30% isn't included in the 'basket' used to calculate the figures. I'm sure we've all seen certain foods increase by a massive amount, up to 100% in some cases, but they often don't count when inflation is calculated.

Millions of folk voted the unelected Thai PM in????   By saying millions of folk, I assume you mean the Thai electorate.

The interesting thing about this is that I believe the commission works to a regulatory framework where they legally have to set a rate that takes all costs etc. into account? The government is not obliged to follow this though. So there's a suggestion that the government is happy for this news to be put out there and will eventually settle on a lower increase that will make them look like the good guys who stood up for the little guy.

Inflation for average, poor Thais.  

They don't count inflation for us rich people because we don't care if Baked Beans are 300 baht a can or 400 baht a can, we'll pay whatever just to have our beans on toast.

This is from a source we are not allowed to name. So I'm clearly right. The price was reduced and now it is planned to increase it again. Article dated October 2023.

On my final bills (don't care how they're made up)

I've always paid under 4bht/unit until this months bill.

Which was 160bht for 36 units (4.44bht/unit)

 

What they announce, and what the final bill is have never matched.

All around the world prices increase from much, to a lot, to s...loads depending the country. I don't see how and why Thailand should be a safe heaven for price increase. I find it's just delayed compared to western countries. Pork has gone up a lot, cooking oil too,  fuel has increased although being capped by the government... Just name it, it's all up. Normal that the electricity bill goes up too, it was to be expected. Hard to remember 100% but I think we are now paying something like 5% more than 10 years ago, normal it goes up to me. Just my 2 cts... Cheers!

Headlines in Bangkok Post this morning/1 Dec that the PM was shocked to hear about the proposed price increase.   From reading the article I would say the increase will be reduced or delayed again.
