How many people expect factual information on this site? Ok, in a few sub-forums like DIY or something there might be a useful answer. But mostly I have no high expectations from this forum.

OK, links which are clearly propaganda or lies or racist should be removed without exception. And, yes, fact checkers do a have a role to play.

It's worth noting Mark Zuckerberg's recent testimony (yesterday iirc) where a senator asked him if he felt that he had a constitutional right to lie to congress. Censorship does have a role to play in the well being of society where the source is clearly toxic.

I noticed the change and I like it. Even though I was banned for what now is acceptable and now I see why, Thanks.

It's safe to say only the academics (the left) can be trusted to do the fact-checking, decide what is propaganda, what is true, and what is racist, correct?

You'd prefer the uneducated to do the fact checking?

So, you're including yourself in the academic category it seems. Be careful on that high horse.

Indeed. One might get hurt falling off a horse.

Everyone but academics are uneducated?

For me most forums are a mixture of opinions, "facts" (real or imagined), humour, and abuse (sadly).

I read the posts, listen to the opinions, check the facts, laugh or otherwise respond to the humour, and ignore completely the abuse if it comes my way.

I do not think, however much "rules" (or is that censorship?) are applied, the nature of "forums" will change given the nature of the society we are living in.

I'm mystified as to why emojis are available for moderator comments, yet if you use them you're suspended. Seems much like entrapment to me. Humor, not humuor  differs with everyone, a laughing face shouldn't get you put behind bars.

First, over the years I agree with and like many of your opinions,I use to feel the same about the use of the laugh troll emoji, live and let live.

But

It should be if its intent is to troll and is abused or used (laughing emojis) in a manner thats against its original purpose ! There are many in that World News forum that are intolerant to opposing opinions .

I use laughing emojis when I think something is funny, including posters. What was its original purpose?

Troll is way overused.

Isn't it curious how the right wing seem to like the negative emojis but the left wing doesn't?

It's the sad and confused I'll put a bounty on.

Laughing with or laughing at? The latter is aggressive behaviour.

What about people who are here just for laughs?

Should I have to listen to such dull, going nowhere dross from (usually) Brit coma-victims?

There's a Biden might win thread. And a lot of bland posturing about polling and what it means. From unknowing losers sitting in rice paddies in Issan.  Caveat: I am no better.

Why try to be Wiki? What movitates you dullards?

As I said above: On the internet, be funny, provocative, or gone.

"Mature" posting -shoot me now.

Sometimes come here for anti - entertainment. If I want amusing and witty I'll go to Netflix, youtube, etc. One can get sick of amusing. One can long for normal.

I do find too that the little summaries on topics like Biden or the Ukraine war aren't a bad way to keep up with stuff. Australian news might be floods, errant youth, and boring politics. Here in five minutes you sometimes get a decent update, followed by people who disagree, sometimes including right wing talking points that you'd have to watch Fox News to see.

But you definitely need some amusing and controversial posts though after a while you see patterns from the same posters, e.g. the monger brigade, and it no longer is the shock of the new.

I don't think you have any clue who "the monger brigade" is and isn't, nor what their politics are. I don't think anyone has given that the two issues are completely unrelated.

I made not have been clear. I am talking about the site more broadly and whether serious posts have a place or whether the aim should be entertaining and provocative.

First I noted the news topics which the poster discussed.

Then about his comment about the need for provocative or interesting posts and, when I think of that type of thing, I think of topics such as in the Pub that can seem less shocking now - they can be entertaining, or sometimes sad, or a bit tiresome. I am not commenting on the politics of mongers though sometimes it is interesting to see how they deal with both - such as yourself where your posts could seem like two different people but all good.

I make no apologies for reacting differently to different events if that's what you mean. I'm not a team player.

It's interesting to me sociologically that such privileged old whities pick these very odd hills to die on. Euro's with plush medical insurance loving Trump is another baffler.

Baffling, in view of the social progress that's led to such better conditions and happiness for all. Why wouldn't those privileged old whities want to move back home? Stupid, innit?

I took a break for a few years and came back recently and while I agree it is refreshing to have the light touch moderation (George taking one out and shooting him must given the right message to some of the others) it does feel a bit dull with hardly anyone here. God only knows how it can make any money for I have never intentionally clicked on an advert.

And it must be said the audience appears to be an ever shrinking ageing male one with nair a female or an under 40 to lighten the tone. There are so many other places to waste time on now as well Facebook groups,X and Reditt to name but 3 and all have that missing demographic in spades. The days of TVF or nowhere have long gone and I'm not sure it's salvageable in the modern era.

On a practical level re emoticons this plethora of choices is bordering on absurd and makes no sense. The Redditt up vote down vote would be much better so that the cumulative score is the post authority.

But thanks for all the effort from everyone I still quite enjoy the place when I'm  country with nothing better to do. And to those on the World News threads that I annoy with my trenchant opinions don't worry I'm back to the UK on the 21st from where I promise I will leave you alone!

Imop  broadly speaking,a joke, something said thats meant to be funny in a  comical expression  .  Negatively, It can be used in a derogatory way for trolling, usually abused when the poster hasn’t expressed a joke or something meant as  comical in a forum .

I largely agree, but I do not see it as trolling, I see it more as an anonymous vote.

I’ll have to think on it .
I’m not a fan of the use of  “ somebody reacted to a post”.

I don't know from what church any discussion of lowering the age of homosexual consent came from. I didn't know there was more than one age of consent.

I absolute do support every one of the other things you mentioned. I have a policy of live and let live. Interest in other peoples' legal sexual proclivities is a religious thing.
