You won't find that here, ask for a Shimano internal geared hub replacement from a reputable bike shop who can install it for you.

 

Your suggestion is certainly good enough to try,

Anyhow, can you tell me roughly what difference I can expect? That will be very helpful.

I asked tripleCats Khun Noo to do the job.

It will require quite some adjustments of the frame

You suggestion is also much cheaper than a Rohloff, which is over 1000€.

But since I don't plan anymore trips through South America or parts of Europe, this will do at my advanced age.

They can source a used 3 Speed Shimano hub with the handlebar gear shifter as these are common here in SE Asia.

You may also opt for a Nexus 7 speed also made by Shimano, which will give you a better range if going up hills.

Rohloff is essentially the Rolex of internal gear hubs, true precision German engineering, but the Shimano internal hubs are strong workhorses also.
