What (officially) happens to the Thai Lottery Money

Featured Replies

Not sure if this has been asked before,  Does anybody know what happens to the profits from the Thai Lottery?   According to my mrs and from what I've seen  somebody lands the jackpot every time  and I can't ever remember a "roll over"    How many tickets do they actually print ? There's only 1 million combinations and  there seem to be plenty of duplicates  I don't think they sell them all

In 2022, the government's earnings from the national lottery revenue in Thailand amounted to approximately 54 billion Thai baht. The Thai Government Lottery Office delivers 23 percent of ticket revenue to the Treasury Department.

I am fully aware of that, I was asking what actually happens to the money they collect from the stupid people , I have heard various theories as to where it all ends up

I lot of people win, and there are a lot of prizes. All the people selling it are making money as well.

My mother-in-law sells lottery.

It might be in Thailand but not where I live, a certain percentage gets paid to charities it also shows the draw live on TV.

What's your point? Same as donating moneys to charities plus having a chance to win big. 150 million dollars jackpot next week's Powerball. Tonight, I won a few grand again.

I actually object to the charity donations,  if I wanted to give to charity I would , On the rare  occasions that I play the lotto i do it to win and being a mercenary selfish type I would like to win as much as possible without sharing it.     Who decides which charities should get a share anyway,   ay one time lotto money was being used to refurbish the Royal opera house.. hardly a good or worthy cause in my opinion

It's not the same as donating money to charity. It's fun for a lot of people, but it is a hideously regressive tax that really benefits no one. A few crumbs here and there to look good in the press.

I found some information about lottery money donations for charities in Australia in 2023. According to 1, thanks to people playing Lotterywest games in 2022-23, a record-breaking return to the WA community for the third year in a row was produced with $1.05 billion going back to WA in grants and prizes. The Lottery Office Charity Fund donates 100% of the proceeds contributed to Australian charities and public interest funds 2. If you’re looking for the best charities to donate to in 2023, you can check out this 3 article. It lists the 7 best charities to donate to in 2023 (not for profit organizations) and provides some tips on how to choose the right charity.

Of course there is money left, it goes into the Treasury.

It seems pretty well run to me. What the government does with the "profit" is anyone's guess.

According to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), if you win in prize draws, raffles, lotteries, and instant scratches, you don’t need to declare your winnings. You can have the whole prize to yourself and you don’t have to pay any taxes

So, it's just like donating to charity?

80 or 100 baht a ticket?

I said my mother-in-law sells it, I did not say I bought it from her, so I have no idea.

There’s also the unofficial lottery. In the USA, they call it The Numbers.

In the 90’s, there was a book called girls, guns, and ganja: the secrets of Thai underground economy. It said gambling dwarfed all other vices and that underground lotteries were 80% of it.

When vendors can sell for 25% more than the official price, Bht 100 not Bht 80.

They used to charge even more for "lucky" numbers ,  has that now been stopped theoretically?

Its a bit weird how the tickets are sold anyway ,  with people buying them in bulk and selling them on , I remember a few years ago there was a news report involving a big Fat Thai Guy  who wore a bright blue suit,  can't remember his name of what it was about but his office was jammed full of filing cabinets all full of lottery tickets literally millions of them , anybody remember that ?

never used to hear of the winners year ago , now they are all over the TV and social media..  strange stories of people losing jackpot winning tickets  and others allegedly finding them , whats the chances of that happening ?

My mrs said anybody who has a jackpot ticket is now advised to register it with the police !   surely the best thing would be to say nothing to anybody,  especially the police

So?

So?

So it is NOT very well run. Buyers are being ripped off.

If & when it goes online, this will not happen, but there will be so many more poor out-of-work vendors begging on the streets.

And maybe your MiL will have to move in with you!  555

Would you say 'So' if petrol stations stuck 25% on top of the official price of your fill-up?

Why should the vendors not be able to charge what they want? What are you, a communist?

My MIL is welcome to come stay with us, she's a great gal.

See you did not answer my final question regarding petrol.

I see you edited the post. Did you add the question?

In any event, I do not like the government controlling the price of fuel and would be happy to see vendors allowed to set their own price (higher or lower) as they see fit.

Why should a pump in Silom be compelled to charge the same as a pump in Prawet?

Does a hotel room in Silom not cost more than a hotel room in Prawet?

I see you did not answer either of my questions:

1. Why should the vendors not be able to charge what they want?

2. Are you a communist?

1. They can charge as much as the gullible customers will pay.

2. No way.

are you for real ?  Its bad enough with the snowflakes accusing everybody of being far right extremists,  and now you  throwing words like "communist" around. Jesus what is wrong with people these days.   There are very few genuine far right extremists in the world and probably even fewer genuine communists.  what is wrong with normal insults?  there is obviously no shortage of just plain simple dick head$ and ar$ehole$  around

No panties ruffled or pearls clutched,   but just  thoroughly  bored with people hurling these pathetic political attempts at insults at people who disagree with their views,

"extreme right wing"    "fascist "  "nazi"   etc etc    although admittedly its the fist time I have seen "communist"  for a while
