"We're queueing for the escalator to go down, only one working".

"Security done. Big queue for passport control". 1130 Sunday 28th January.

No automatic gates. Complete chaos according to my source.

I went through Sunday two weeks (Jan 14th) back similar time. Only one escalator going down from security to immigration then, but it wasn't chaos. Lots of people yes, and the automatic gates didn't seem to be in use, but there were airport staff directing people, all the desks were manned and it didn't take more than 15 minutes to clear immigration.

Update. The auto gates were for Thais only but no takers.

.... except for my Thai 11yo grandson who managed to slip through the auto gates unimpeded yesterday. I didn't know where he had gone! Fortunately there was a manned gate next to the auto gates with nobody there that they let me through avoiding the hugh queues. Found him inside the terminal.

Was there a sign somewhere stating that?

There were auto gates for Thais, but on the other side of the escalator were autogates for people with passports with chips (ie "Epassports"). But the staff were directing people away from those gates.

I told them my passport would work, but when I got close to the gate, I saw a hand written sign indicating that using the automated gate would cancel a re-entry permit.
