Liquor Policy Committee drops plan to extend liquor sale hours, for now

Why is there even a committee involved in this? A group of self-interested retards with their own agenda, no less. This government is weak.

This is the Thai way. No one wants to make a decision. So they form a committee.

What is interesting is that no one knows why this rule was first enacted, eons ago by some "Coup-Maker" ca. 1972 (Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn?), eliminated and then reinstated during the reign of Shinawatra.

It's about the kids? Or government workers? Or ???

Hence almost any argument for change can be rebutted. Progress comes slowly in the Kingdom, for a reason.

Our local 7/11 sells out of hours, rings it up a 5PM, they even deliver. Have they dropped the tax reduction as well? I see some drink has shot up, probably in anticipation, eg 100 pipers 8 year blended malt went up 2 weeks ago from 679 baht to 815.

Yes, the proposed (50%?) reduction of import taxes on wines and spirits seems to have been swept under the carpet (AGAIN!) Seems like someone doesn't want any competition?

Mr. Somsak also expressed support for establishing a dedicated fund, titled “The Fund for the Rehabilitation and Care of those affected by alcoholic beverages,” to assist individuals negatively impacted by alcohol consumption.

Alternatively the government could just instruct the police to enforce traffic laws. They won’t.

Not yet... crazy Thai law which should be over-turned.

You can drink from 5pm-4am an eleven hour stretch, yet cannot have a beer with your lunch...

Tourists would enjoy the freedom.

As for Thai office workers and school kids other measures can be applied.

School kids - easy - ID!

Is Thailand the most obsessed country in Asia if not the world regarding alcohol related stories. seems like every week, there's a story on alcohol sales, restrictions,  bans, and times.

You would think a country known for hedonism and wild nightlife culture would be discussing any other topics aside from alcohol related issues.

Shows the strength of feeling that people have about silly outdated laws that help to keep Thailand  "third world countryt"!

The story forgets to mention that after handing over the flowers, the protesters got on the bus, where lao kao, sangsom, and beers were opened for celebrating their victory.

The time was almost 4 PM.

No problem having a drink in the bars clubs ect untill 0400hrs 🥳

Tourists can't have a alcohol drink 1400hrs -1700hrs

Just does not make sense 🤯

I have heard from a very reliable source in Sukhothai that research has shown that if shops sell alcohol between 2pm and 5pm the solar ice-caps will melt, dinosaurs will roam northern Thailand and the sky will fall in. So best to be safe and avoid such catastrophe.

Worse then the kids in Kinder garden.

Grow up, the Restriction Doesn't stop people from Buying Somewhere else and for sure it won't stop people from drinking.

About 300 members of the anti-liquor network from Sukhothai province, hometown of Somsak

So about 300 head cases from a single province decide what the other 70 million can do? No wonder Thailand's plummeting down the table of democratic countries.

A very silly rule from day 1,In bkk they are bars that sell  alcohol in the afternoon.Mostly to tourist but not a issue.Anywhere else round the country similar so why not drop it,If u want u can get a take away from the bar as well.So a very silly rule that should not exist

Sure, give the kids an ID... and the small shops will still ignore it, [they want to sell]

The solution is to stop shops selling to kids... that takes a deeper thought process.

And now a Buddhist day approaches - again - where all alcohol sales are banned whether you are Buddhist or not. And then they'll be an alcohol ban if they ever have have elections again (is there any point?) when even non-voters are banned from buying a beer. The redeeming feature is that so many ignore laws they don't agree with that any bans make little difference.

which restricts the sale of liquor from 11am to 2pm and from 5 pm to midnight.

2 articles say these times.    Isnt it restricted  from 2-5 pm and 12-5 am?     I just know several times this 2-5 pm ban has caused me as a tourist ill will.   Wanting a cold beer or 6 to take to the hotel or condo fridge.   Peehaps this ban causes people to go to the little mom n pop places where you can but anytime.

More studies. Nothing decided. So not dropped but kicked into the long grass again.

Crazy.

You can legally buy alcohol (and drink it in bars) in some areas until 4 am but between 4 am and 11 am then 2pm and 5 pm " cannot" in theory anyway and as a fact in supermarkets  like Big C and Lotus's both of which have massive displays of the 3 Thai beers by the case. Get to check out 1 minute past 2 and the till won't process the purchase and the cashier says sorry too late. Go in to a small local shop and it's a few baht more but they will enter the sale in a notebook and I assume ring it up on the till later.. if they even have a till.

Keep the 4 am to 11am by all means but the 2 to 5 pm thing is ridiculous in this day and age.

I do remember the licensing hours in the UK, and on Sundays a total ban in Wales, limited hours in England and all shops shut all day. And the rush to get one in at the call "last orders" on any day having to swiftly down that pint as a few minutes later the call was " time ladies and gentlemen please" and there was no arguing with that unless you were a favoured local and the landlord was offering a " lock in". Back then I could also buy several pints and 10 Embassy from the cigarette machine all for 10 bob for a cracking session. Showing my age I do believe with these comments.

The daytime ban is really stupid. So if I'm in a store and want to buy a bottle of wine for my wife and me, I can't because of the stupid ban. Get rid of it.

Don't forget the majority of the senate committee is run by Prayut's men, and he wouldn't like to see his law overruled.

It isn't his law. It's an old one resurrected by the Thaksin government.

Why not restrict alcohol purchase outside current permitted hours/days to foreigners? ID could be proved by passport/driving licence.

it works for pork/alcohol purchases in Muslim countries like UAE.
