Fuel for BMW 220 i 2021 model

Featured Replies

Any advise , perhaps from 220 i owners or 330 owners

which fuels Can be used and which Cannot

conflicting answers from 3 sources

appreciated, thanks.

Be careful ...lower octane means slower detonation. On interference engines thats a problem!

I would suggest only 95 and above.

Putting 91 in it will damage the engine.

Can always go higher, but not lower.

The fuel cap door... when open does it list any fuel types ?

The owners manual...does it list any fuel types ?

When you asked the dealership ....... ?

Thanks all, i am waiting for a sensible reply from BMW, ive read the fuel cap and asked 3 independent BMW dealers

all with differing replies.

hope to have clarity early next week

are there any BMW owners, reading this,

220, 330 series owners ?

I follow what the inside of the fuel flap says. That's what it is there for.

No. 'Detonation' by definition means an explosive combustion ('knock') rather than a smoothly propagating flame front. So there is no such thing as 'slow detonation'. Lower octane fuels are more prone to detonation. Higher octane fuels have the unstable HC compounds refined out.  Adding ethanol (E10/E20) increases the octane so Thai gasohol fuels actually have a real-world octane rating somewhat above their quoted RON.

BMW manufacture their engines in a variety of states of tune depending on the sales area, particular model variant and date of manufacture - hence you need to check in the supplied handbook and/or fuel flap sticker, as others have said.

However all BMWs produced in the last 5 years or so will run perfectly well on 91RON. The engines are fitted with knock sensors which detect detonation and back off the ignition advance if its detected. Some models are fitted with wideband 02 sensors and Flex sensors and they would run a bit better on 95 under high load conditions.

I have 330e, I use 95 or higher if I can find.
