In the aftermath of the tragic events at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Vladimir Putin's response has ignited a flurry of speculation and scrutiny. Operation Blame Ukraine seems to be underway, with the Kremlin seizing upon the opportunity to deflect attention from its own shortcomings onto its neighbor to the west.

Putin's handling of crises has often been characterized by a preference for stage-managed victories and a tendency to retreat from the spotlight in the face of unscheduled setbacks. This pattern was evident in his delayed response to previous tragedies such as the Kursk submarine disaster and the Beslan school siege. Now, with the devastating attack at Crocus City Hall, Putin's initial silence and subsequent attempt to shift blame onto Ukraine fit into this familiar narrative.

The Kremlin's narrative, however, lacks coherence and credibility. While Putin hinted at Ukrainian involvement in the attack, he stopped short of directly attributing responsibility. This hesitancy may stem from a fear that the American government possesses intelligence that could undermine such claims. Moreover, Putin's embarrassment at his security agencies' failure to act on warnings of an imminent attack adds another layer of complexity to the situation.

The attack itself, which claimed the lives of at least 137 people, has left a deep scar on the reputation of Putin and the security services upon which he relies. The brutality of the assault, with victims falling prey to gunfire and suffocation as the auditorium was set ablaze, has shocked the nation. Questions abound regarding the inept security measures at the venue and the failure of local police to respond effectively.

While some have entertained conspiracy theories suggesting collusion within the Russian establishment, the more plausible explanation points to Islamist terrorist groups capitalizing on Russia's wartime distractions and ethnic tensions. The presence of up to 8 million migrants from Central Asia in Russia provides fertile ground for extremist infiltration, exacerbating ethnic tensions and creating vulnerabilities in the security apparatus.

In the wake of the attack, the Kremlin is likely to intensify its crackdown on dissent and press freedom, using the tragedy as a pretext to tighten its grip on power. Calls to reinstate the death penalty for terrorism and raids on migrant communities signal a troubling escalation of authoritarian measures.

Despite the propaganda value in blaming Ukraine, the Kremlin's response to the attack is unlikely to address its systemic security vulnerabilities. Instead, Putin may exploit the tragedy to justify further military action in Ukraine, leveraging Kremlin-linked media and social media manipulation to shape the narrative in its favor.

As the dust settles on the tragedy at Crocus City Hall, the true extent of Putin's machinations and the repercussions for Russia's domestic and foreign policies remain uncertain. However, one thing is clear: Operation Blame Ukraine is just the latest chapter in Putin's playbook of diversion and disinformation.

I don't understand what point you are trying to make here.....

But, Putin coincidentally added LGBTQ+ to the list of extremist organisations on the same day as the Crocus attack.

Maybe if he wasn't terrorising this ' dangerous 'community he could have focused more on protecting his citizens from Isis.

Perhaps this community will also become another scapegoat for the Crocus attack beside Ukraine.

Russia adds 'LGBT movement' to list of extremist and terrorist organisations (msn.com)

That's what one does when Muslim gay dudes from Ukraine attack your citizens.

Also consistent with the 1970's mutiny of a missile frigate and sub chaser led by Soviet Captain 3rd Rank and political commisar Valery Sablin whose vision of communism, however, was not the communism practiced by the Soviet Union. https://www.military.com/history/  March 16, 2023 by Blake Stilwell.

Nice opinion post from the Economist. Honest news is long gone.

I would have thought if it's an Islamic terrorists attack, they would be happy to blow themselves up and die along with their targets and not try and escape back to whichever hole they came from.

You would have thought.... but there have been plenty of cases of Islamic terrorist trying to flee after the attack.

The West passed on intel to Putins lot, even that large gatherings were the target, yet no real armed police presence at this venue..🥴

Then points the finger at Ukraine for his cock-up.

It's no wonder Ukraine is dealing with Putin's aggression.........

The Moscow populace must be...........🙄

In other words, Putin's 'cock-up' could well have been his conscious decision not to act on the US warning ...

Not always.  I watched what videos there were taken by cell phones during the assault - the attackers looked like they were big guys, total unlike those pictured as captured shooters.  If cornered, yeah, they

would rather blow themselves up before being captured.  This immediate capture and looking at those captured, surely looks like a staged event for Putin to try to garner some more public support for the Ukraine war which has wiped out a generation of young Russians.  My opinion only of course but I am not a fan of Putin nor of ISIS nor of any of the militant Muslims.

Putin is a low-life creep dictator, who oppresses his own people to the point where he is likely despised not only throughout his Nation but throughout the entire region. There are likely thousands of people who would like to take his life and punish Russia, it's no coincidence the Russia is one of the least popular nations on earth, and Russian people are some of the least popular people anywhere in the world.

Have read reports that the original target was the uber-nationalist singer Shaman and Putin fan who was playing at Crocus at the weekend the US warned about. With increased security they called it off and here we are.

There is no connection whatsoever with Ukraine, no matter what Putin or his cronies claim.

I heard the four were apprehended after having driven 10 hours along route M3 which heads directly towards Ukraine - they were about 100 km from the Ukraine border when they were caught. Not sure where else they could have been heading? Turning off towards Belarus perhaps, but that makes less sense...
