I will be visiting Australia next week, for 1 month.

Can someone recommend a SIM for a tourist?

Data 6Gb would be fine, and some local calls.

I will mostly be around Melbourne.

Last time I saw a kiosk at the international arrivals in Sydney, I imagine there would be one in Melbourne as well.

 

Otherwise head to the large supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths, there are always prepaid sim packages on sale.

 

If you have a phone with esim you may be able to order and activate it online, the Amaysim prepaid sims can be bought as esim as well.

What are these ?

The telco's have kiosks at the airports.  They are all pretty much the same.  Just get a pre-paid sim. 

 

If the queues are too long, Coles, Woolworths, Aldi sell them as well.

As mentioned in another thread, you might consider enabling roaming on that sim and keeping it on the network, as Two Factor Authentication (2FA) slowly becomes compulsory for many businesses.  

 

I rang a call center in Australia last week and before the staff member could even access my account I had to tell them the 6 digit code they sent to my Aussie sim card / phone number. 

 

I would not be surprised if the banks start to implement this for internet banking in the future.

I picked up a SIM from Vodaphone at their outlet in Melbourne CBD.

The connection and connectivity was fine, except in some areas at Clyde North.

Just wanted a SIM for one month only, so all is fine.

Next time, I would choose Telstra.

No problem.  As mentioned, keeping it on the network may save you going through the hassle the member in the other thread is facing.  Leave it sitting somewhere for a year, but as more and more businesses move to 2FA, I am sure it will come in handy one day.
