Stereotyping money shrewdness

Featured Replies

I was at one of my volunteer charity committee meetings last night being a board member when anothet board member wrongly or rightly made a comment about finances being thrifty relating to Jewish people.

He said we should run this like the Jewish nursing home down the road who we heard had the board members mowing the lawn to save money and residents given home brand ice cream , he said , oh no don't want to be anti Semitic but those Jewish people know how to be thrifty he said !

I told him Scottish people have that stereotyping too ,he joked maybe they are half Scottish half Jewish !

And do they ? Is that true ?

Is it stereotyping?

I always remember my late father telling me that the pawnbrokers were all "Jews" , the myths

They charge high interest etc

No evidence of this

And let's stereotype Scottish people,I hear this in Pattaya bars all the time they have long pockets

And a Tv commercial advertising car insurance with a Scottish actor

"A Scot is very Canny when it comes to money !

Let's look at statistics data ,are these two nationalities more thrifty shrewd , Canny , etc when it comes to money ,is that a true statement???

Is that a myth and why did these myths start ?

Is there any evidence to say this

Deep pockets and short arms! 555

Drove some Canadian clients in London two days ago. They asked me about appropriate TIP. Then went on to comment that how Canadians differ from Canoes. Canoes TIP but Canadians don't was their reply. Which, thankfully, they went on to prove wasn't correct!

As far as I know a long time ago in the Middle Ages or so Christian people were not allowed (by their religion) to charge interest for lending money.

As far as I know Jews didn't have this restriction and they did exactly that, charge interest. It seems that is a reason why some of them were the money lenders of that time.

I have no idea how the situation is now. But many proverbs seem to be hundreds of years old and still exist - even if the original reasons don't exist anymore.

Again, like ga-ga love for old misogynist trash-films here, this stereotyping nonsense applies only drunken, fading oldies found only in internet backwaters like this.

No one under 60 labors under this dim-witted soft racism.

Next up: Georgie demands to know why he can't call black people colored anymore. Aren't they actually sort of colored?

John, You obviously must think everyone comes from America?

I never met any African American people , probably never will

Your a classic stereotypist hypocrite John .. according to you anyone over 60 is a racist ,is that in America your alleging?

All the old American blokes over 60?

That's the funniest thing I ever read

You seem to have some sort of chip on  your shoulder against old American guys over 60 ,maybe you were bent over by one of those old hillbillies ???

, probably one  the straw hatted old hillbillies with the blue braces  on  and beard and now you have PTSD against old American guys over 60 .

Imagine that ,going through life seeing all old American blokes over 60 as racists ,

Well you know there's life outside America eh ?

Huh?  What's wrong with calling 'black' people coloured?  After all, I think the woke phrase is 'people of colour'.  Semantics.....

Happily for me, a lot of this Western PC/woke cr*p has passed me by - there are some definite advantages in living in Asia for the past 25 years 🙂

You don't mean it offensively, but colored went out the window for good in the mid-70's. Because it was used on many "No Colored's allowed" signs during the civil rights era, African American's don't care for it. What do you call non-American people of African descent?

Oddly, the accepted term is people of color, partic in the UK (says Wiki).

I also learned on Wiki that actual African people do not use the term, Black. Although it's generally seen as a respectful go-to; as in the use by the organization, Black Lives Matter.

I am happy to be of non-help to you on this.

'Coloured' is still used extensively in the UK, with no ill-meaning intended.  All my friends in the UK (of all ages) use this phrase and never use PoC - I assume that PoC is a USA term.

Happily for the UK, we abolished slavery several hundred years previously, so we don't have any 'baggage' connected with 'whites only' signs etc.

I lived in the UK from 2001 to 2009. I never heard anyone say colored. I heard a bit of POC, but Black seemed the go-to. POC is def out of date in the states. I'm sharing my own experience, not devaluing yours.

I recall mixed race people being referred to as "half a pint of Guiness". I thought that was pretty funny, but would not ever say it myself.

My 'White' Daughter in the UK, told me she likes to date 'BLACK' men, so yes black is still used.

I think of Black as a neutral, non-offensive descriptor. African American became more popular in the 90's in the states as a show of respect. Notice that Obama is almost always referred to as the first African American President, and much less so as the first black one.

Americans are def always in flux on racial descriptors. Toni Morrison, a great black writer, referred to Bill Clinton as "the first black president", due to his poor background and embrace of black culture. It was a popular point of view, but has since fallen out of favor. Toni Morrison ultimately regretted saying it.

So those born in say Scotland should be called African Scottish :cheesy: by the woke brigade

I worry less about the woke brigade than I do about a Martian invasion.

But if a person who grew up in Scotland and was of African descent described themselves as such, it would be no biggie to me.

I used to go to Nottinghill Carnival every year to hang out at the legendary Channel One sound system. Jamaicans and Trinadadians did not describe themselves as English. They were Jamaicans and Trini's.

A fellow in the insurance business mentioned some sort of "lightning " that causes fires + skyscraper collapses and also results in insurance payouts.  He was an old guy who lived in The Bronx back in the 70's and 80's.

I have no idea what he was on about.

is laughable as you're asking this on a forum full of racists....angry bitter old white men who liked life in the 50's....

and probably is why they live here so they can be the man of the house and control women....

Its laughable that you accuse members of being racists , then follow that by making racist comment yourself .

You then accuse others of being angry , whist writing an angry post .

BTW , is your Father the person you described above ?

Shylock and that damn pound of flesh ...

... has the Merchant of Venice been cancelled yet, and Billy's statues torn down :cheesy:

Damn racist and anti-ist ... the whole lot of them.  To the gallows with them and take that J.K bi-atch also.   Thinking out loud, how can that be allowed in a civilized society :coffee1:
