This begs the question: is this reality? Are people genuinely prepared to resort to extreme measures over trivial disputes? Why can't conflicts be resolved amicably, without the threat of violence hanging over us?

thailand is no different from other countries in this repect, and much safer than many, in the usa for example, a small slight can result in someone getting a gun and killing people, usually at their place of education or work.

in the uk, thankfully with robust firearms laws, looking at someone wrongly, criticising someone can result in a stabbing.

for sure certain individuals around the world need to calm down, and as you say resolve conflicts amicably. i don't have much hope.

After many years in Thailand, or elsewhere, I have an understanding why some poeple always meet trouble wherever they go, and it is not about Thailand or thai culture!

Never experienced one incident in Thailand for 20 years, and very few any other places

Not had any myself, but I saw a few with other people. In one a moron farang got the beating he richly deserved for behaving badly in a gogo, and I was able to get a couple of Thai cops to help a farang getting beaten up by bargirls.

I always felt safer in Bkk than in Auckland or London.

Maybe that is what you call a fulfilled life. But personally, I am happy when I live a quiet life without any incidents where I fight and end up in a hospital.

Your fulfilled life is drooling while looking at girls at least halve your age in a GoGo?

You have had 100 fights?

Is that more than Mike Tyson?

You must go looking for trouble.

You would be amazed, how many drunk foreigners make problems with the girls in the Red light area of Amsterdam.

Not really. Most of my life is productive and I live happily with my longtime girlfriend.

Sometimes I visit a couple of bars and I look at sexy girls, and maybe I buy them a drink or two. I don't remember any of them telling me they don't want the drinks and they don't want to be touched. Most want more action and more money. And they pretend to like me. That's their job.

Many men, including me, like to see pretty young girls, and they don't care about old women. And many men accept that 99% of girls are not really interested in "old men" - and anybody over 40 is old in the eyes of a 20-year-old. Old men who are strong and win fights and all that are still old men. So, from their point of view there won't be much difference between you and me - even if you think they admire your old strong body.

I've moved on to drooling over women 1/3 my age.

I imagine that info would have added a certain frisson to your relationship...

Depends where it is I suppose. We had a local live music venue open recently. A group consisting of bass and rhythm electric guitars, keyboard player, drummer and vocalist play Thai pop between 9pm and midnight each night. Outside, the owner plays his acoustic guitar with an occasional vocalist. I prefer the outside but my Mrs and Thai friends like the group inside!

It sounds like your local live music venue offers a diverse range of musical experiences to suit different preferences! Inside, the energetic performances of the band playing Thai pop create a lively atmosphere, perfect for those who enjoy dancing and socializing to upbeat tunes.

Court case next month, I'll tell you the result. I'm expecting him to be let off as killing foreigners (for any reason) is ok in Thailand.

God help you if you bump into a Thai, sitting on your beach house steps though.

So hows the Court case coming along ?

I am surprised at the OP's post, as it is perfectly obvious to anyone who reads the news, even on just this site, that there are many instances each month of often extreme violence over the most trivial things.

The reasons are a possible loss of face, which it could be argued is of even more importance to Thais than money - and that's really saying something! Most of us simply roll with it if we are outsmarted or embarrassed in any way, but for a Thai that is sometimes, all too often, a reason to kill. So much for Buddhist principles.

Add to that we have a large percentage of the population having poor education, and the only way for such people, anywhere, to settle an argument is to use their fists or, as in Thailand, guns which seem to be so readily available. Low intelligence and guns are not a good mix.

And then there is the fact that, often, young males are never taught self-discipline. Many are allowed to do as they wish, and many also lack a father figure as he has done a runner, is a good-for-nothing himself or the kid has been brought up by aged grandparents who can barely take care of themself, let alone raise a boisterous kid properly.

All part of the wonderful culture that Thais are so proud of. The bottom line is, at any sign of trouble, wai and walk away. Always. If you don't, you will lose. Even Macho Man. Six on one, a Thai tradition, wins every time.

The news is not normality.  Normality does not appear in the news.  Things which appear in the news are therefore not normal, and it is up to you to decide if you need to change your behaviour to avoid such abnormal events.

How the heck do you run over someone in a tuk tuk? You can hear them coming from miles away, especially if they have to get to a really high impact speed to do any serious harm.

And where would the Swedish guy be standing or walking to allow himself to be mown down by a tuk tuk?

Its a painful story to tell but lets try it.

We lived in a village and kept ourselves to ourselves.  I work all day so no loud music.  Only two of us in the house.  There is a Karen across the road.  She lets her kids play in the road all day.  They are screaming at full volume and blocking the traffic but it's okay.  The other neaibour has two dangerous dogs running free and they sometimes get out he runs around the village shirtless trying the catch them.  They crap around the house and the mess is baked in the sun.  He doesn't clean it for weeks at a time.  The smell fills out garden and comes in the windows.  So we have to close the windows.  But hey no problem.  We keep ourselves to ourselves.

So one day the Karen stands in the road and starts screaming at our house.  She starts shaking the gate.  My gf tells her she has the wrong person.  The person she wants is the landlord and the landlord doesn't live here.  She is mental so she walks away.  She repeats this 5 more times over the course of a few months.  Another neaibour says she was throwing stones at out house when we were out.

This freak sees me leave every morning for work.  She wakes up early and blocks the exit of the village.  She tells the guard to block us in.  She says if you want to go out you get out of the car and open it.  I got out of the car and opened it.  She took a video of the entire thing.  She then posted it around the village Line group.  She then advertised our house for rent again.

At this point the landlord was concerned.  Because her house was up for rent again.  We chatted with the landlord and she showed us the Line group.  My gf never joins the village Line group and now I know why.  This was the final straw.  The village president removed her from the committee and warned her not to assault and film people.

So it turned out she was going around houses asking for rent.  She says she is incharge of the rent and we should give it to her.

Just more proof that you should never give someone power without rules in place.  They will abuse the power.  Stand in their pajamas at 9pm screaming and throw stones at you house.  I can't image what her three daughters thought of her.
