Zelensky claims Ukraine has taken control of the Russian town of Sudzha. How we got to this point in the war — and why the latest incursion is a big deal.

Really, many examples? I don't believe you in the slightest. If you want to make claims then you need credible links. Good to see you hang out in the can't link to it camp.

Meanwhile as reported above Ukraine has knocked out a 3rd bridge crippling Russian logistics.

I'm sure both sides have made captives. It's called WAR and I know you love it - I want peace. The Ukrainians are getting desperate to show their USA masters they can do something - more money! more money! more money!  any rational person knows the end is near for Ukraine - interesting to see what you say when it happens - no doubt you will spin it as a victory lol

They've already taken it. You are just not keeping up, they have a force of 10,000 now occupying Russia....

Russia is already pulling everyone back to the north of the Semy River while they can.

This will be an extension of the area already occupied by Ukraine

Don't need much of a force to occupy if there are no defenders.

Lots of running away and surrendering by the russians.

Pulling back to a defensive line is a completely normal military action. Given it was a long way from the front the Russian forces in that area would be second rate, and once the Russians bring up better troops I expect the situation to change.

It's hardly been any time since the invasion, so why anyone considers the situation to remain the way it is are too hasty, IMO.

That's a good question.

Either the Ukrainians have a strong force in Kursk, or the Russians are weaker than advertised.

Which do you think is the case?

Your post does beg the question of where these "better" troops are going to come from. AFAIK Russia's best troops have already died or been wounded in the invasion of  Ukraine, and the Russians are hastily calling up manpower out of ethnic minorities from far-flung regions. Putin drafting Russians in the Moscow area would be an admission the propaganda is BS.

The Ukrainians are being very coy about their objectives in this operation. They may well label it "special military"

One thing is obvious, They seem to be a lot better at planning and execution than the Russians.

One Ukrainian artillery brigade commander in eastern Ukraine told the Financial Times that part of the reason for the Russian advance was Kyiv moving its scarce resources north.

His troops were back to rationing shells for their canons — the first time since US aid to Ukraine was held up by Congress — because ammunition had been reallocated for the incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.

Ukraine has also moved upwards of 10,000 troops, including many of its elite airborne forces and mechanised brigades, from Donetsk and Kharkiv regions, where the fiercest battles are under way, according to officials involved with the operation.

Ukraine's position appears increasingly desperate and more and more commentators are starting to question the logic and practicalities of the Kursk incursion. Here's one from the distinquished Finnish pro-Ukraine academic taking issue with Tendar.

Ukraine's public claims about territorial control in the Kursk region seem inflated when compared to the actual size of the settlements.Claiming to control 82 cities and villages in an area which has only one city of 6.000 (Sudzha) is internal PR. Coupled with recent troop redeployments, this raises questions about the progress of the eastern front. The overall outlook for Ukraine is grim. Economic challenges, including a substantial budget deficit, energy crisis, and declining GDP, are compounded by military setbacks. Shortages of essential supplies and decreasing Western support further exacerbate the situation.

Given these factors, it is questionable whether Ukraine can sustain its current strategy. A negotiated settlement might be the more pragmatic path forward for Kyiv.

Evidence of an intensifying response inside Kursk is now clear. Ukrainian soldiers on the ground inside Russia say they are already beginning to see a different level of resistance. Losses are increasing. The Russians have reinforced with better trained units, including marines and special forces. They had studied the area. This belated Russian response to the incursion in Kursk has forced it to divert some troops from strangleholds inside Ukraine in the Donbas. Reflecting this, a Ukrainian government source says military activity in the Donbas has significantly decreased since August 16th. However there is a big exception: Pokrovsk, the town where Russia was making steady advances before the incursion and where it is seeking to maintain heavy pressure on Ukraine.

Can they realistically hold it?  Or advance further?

Do they really need to hold it?

Even if they retreated, they would have already led Russia to waste significant resources.

And some of these resources would need to be permanently used by Russia in border regions in order to avoid another humiliating invasion.

Russia won't care about the sparse Russians in the border regions they are collateral damage. Never forget they burned down Moscow to prevent Napoleon taking it. There is evidence that UKR is digging in and intend to stay and if they do and are indeed as articles abpve have said the best troops they will suffer merciless FAB bombs raining down on their positions. Putin doesn't care about the optcis just the outcome.

except the "sparse Russians" seem to be doing fine under Ukrainian occupation, judging from dozens of videos of them going shopping, talking with Ukrainian soldiers, walking in the street, joking, etc.
there is no resistance from the civilians, which is very different from what happened when the Ruzzians invaded Ukraine.
