looplaw
3 hours ago, webfact said: A Canadian tourist’s relaxing night turned alarming when two Ugandan women allegedly stole his cash while he slept in his Pattaya hotel room. Chonburi Immigration Police have recently arrested two Ugandan nationals, Ms. Mariam, aged 38, and Ms. Sheebah, aged 28, at a hotel in the Khao Pratamnak area of South Pattaya, Chonburi province. Picture courtesy: Siam Rath The arrest follows an issuance of a warrant by the Pattaya Provincial Court on charges of “jointly committing theft at night” on June 17. The incident was reported by Mr. Khalid, the Canadian tourist, who informed Bang Lamung Police Station that he had been robbed by the two women. Picture courtesy: Siam Rath According to Mr. Khalid, the event unfolded on June 10 when he invited the two Ugandan women to his hotel room on Pattaya-Na Kluea Road for a few drinks and to spend the night. He paid them 2,000 baht each for their time. Mr. Khalid claims he eventually fell asleep and, upon waking, discovered that approximately 90,000 baht in Thai and foreign currency he had kept in the safe was missing. Despite the women’s consistent denials, saying they had merely given the man a relaxing massage, evidence suggests otherwise. Picture courtesy: Siam Rath Police have combed through CCTV footage and gathered other forms of evidence, leading to the firm belief that the women are responsible for the theft. Consequently, they were taken into custody for further legal procedures. This story underlines the need for tourists to exercise caution and vigilance while enjoying the vibrant nightlife in tourist hubs like Pattaya. Local authorities assure that they are committed to maintaining safety for all visitors to the area. You'd travel halfway around the world with less than $3,000 USD in cash? Especially as a tourist. What happens if comms are down (for a myriad of reasons), or if your 2FA phone gets lost or stolen or damaged? Or your wallet gets filched on the MRT with all your credit and debit cards in it? It'll take days to clear up that mess and that can get mighty hungry, even if you've paid hotels in advance. With my banks back home, even longer if it happens on a Friday because they won't be open until Monday, even the phone number on the cards. I generally keep $4,900 USD separate from my wallet, because $5K is the non-report limit for some of the countries I visit. Sometimes, I'll go for years between dipping into it. But when I needed it, I needed it. Usually because the bank "detected unusual card use" and 2FA didn't go through, for SIM issues. 1

I guess one could test 9999 or 0000 or even 1234. Some require 6 characters. You may get locked out for a spell. Hard to drop them if they are securely fixed to the wall. Most just require a strip of sheet metal. In any event, everyone in housekeeping knows how to open them. If you have valuables, hide them. The safe is the first place to look. 90K baht is only about US$2,500, I travel with that and pay everything with credit cards.

Popular Post spidermike007
He did not demonstrate the most basic of survival skills. Anytime you bring a stranger to your room much less fall asleep with them in your presence, you have every valuable locked up under key, either in a safe or at a minimum in a piece of luggage with a secure lock on it. Otherwise you are just inviting temptation and you are proving Darwin's theories once again, you are not fit for survival.

Popular Post Kerryd
Khalid is not a "traditional" (as in - formerly from the UK) Canadian name but Canada hands out citizenship and passports to half the world's population in an attempt to get people to "like" them (and to rig voter demographics in ridings the Liberals need additional votes in). Syrian refugee ? Kosovo refugee ? Fake Afghan "translator" ? Fake Nigerian "asylum seeker" ? Just go to Canada, live free on the Liberal's generosity for 3 years while you pad you bank account(s) and then BOOM ! You pretend to swear a "Citizenship Oath", get your Citizenship card and Canadian passport and go back to your home country a rich person (by comparison). (Sheesh, you don't even have to appear in person to swear your oath anymore. You can do it online from literally anywhere - and have a translator tell you what to say. Or just have someone else entirely stand in for you.) Khalid is probably an "Indian" name (as in India, not Indigenous). There are probably more "Indians" in Canada than "African Canadians". Sheesh, "Little Potato" Trudeau's first Defense Minister (Harjit Sajjan) was a guy born in India who migrated to Canada when he was 5. His 2nd woke Defense Minister was Anita Anand who was born in Canada - to parents who migrated from Sri Lanka and Punjab (India). (And shocker - people are just finding out now that more than a couple of his MPs may/are working for foreign gov'ts or Intelligence agencies.) The leader of the NDP party is Jagmeet Singh, also born in Canada (from parents who also immigrated from Punjab). 90,000 baht in a hotel safe and then fall asleep with 2 hookers in the room ? Rookie move. And it was probably more like 9,000 baht but maybe someone was thinking that they'd be "reimbursed" however much they claimed to have lost. Like people who claim they had a bunch of gold necklaces stolen though they couldn't afford to buy a beer for themselves. Surprised he didn't claim his passport(s) and plane ticket had been stolen as well. Favourite trick of people who've run out of money - or overstayed their 30 day stamp. Cash in the plane ticket, sell the passport at a pawn shop. Claim they were stolen, get "emergency travel docs" and a plane ticket from family/friends and hasta la vista suckers ! And who flies to Thailand to pick up African hookers ? I remember days gone by when I used to spend far too much time on Walking Street (which was far more entertaining than any "reality TV show). You'd see the Uzbeki hookers trolling the bars looking for old white guys sitting alone and once in awhile you'd see a group (3-4 usually) of "Africans" strolling from one end of Walking Street to the other and back again every hour or so. And they were scary ! They were not "petite" or even friendly looking. They looked more like a war party searching for prey. (Chatting with different (Thai) bar owners, it seems the main customers for the African girls were - Thai men. When you think about it, an African girl in Thailand is as exotic to Thais as a blonde-haired, white-skinned girl would be in India or Africa or the Middle East). And yeah, hotel safes are notoriously easy to crack. If you think about that, you realize that hotels would have to know how to crack the safes because they'd probably have to reset a dozen of them every week from customers who lock them - on purpose - before checking out. And once one hotel worker knows the code, everyone knows the code. 2

Hotel rooms don't offer much opportunity to play hidey hidey from 2 women, and I would certainly not feel secure. I seriously doubt most room maids could open safes..... and a strip of metal will not do anything to the substantia metal bolts they mostly have. I feel more confident with the larger hotels who I hope take things more seriously. The only problem I had was a place using lockers with padlocks behind reception.... they gave me a key but had another. Another was a pal who stayed in a condo place and the manager lady had a wayward drug taking son and he knew where the over-ride key was..

But if I did, I'd spring for a 2nd room, just based on some dates I've had where I'd pay cash money to get away from her. That goes up exponentially if it's a tag team thing like the OP story. Add in sleeping and the possibility that I'd be drugged and/or robbed, popping for a 2nd room with none of my valuables, that I could escape just seems like the prudent thing to do. 1 1
