many more than a few centuries ago, but ok, the events that led up to that began when Muslims regularly attacked, robbed and killed European Christians on their pilgrimage to Jerusalem. also on their way to the hospital, thus the Hospitaler Knights protected Christians on the way to get repaired after being attacked. that while land was dangerous - filled with violent Muslims who are allowed to do what they will to the visiting infidels. the word "assassin" comes from a tribe in that area. got to the point where war was the only response to guarantee to civilian safety.

The issue is not with Islam. The vast majority of Muslims are decent people, and do not support terror, extremism, nor utterly deplorable behavior, like this. At least the ones I have known do not.
