Swedish elderly arrested in Thailand for serious crime

Sparse information has been shared by Swedish media about a Swedish man who last week – end of July – was arrested in Thailand for “serious crime”.

 

According to SVT News, the man is around 65 years old.

 

“The Foreign Ministry is aware that a Swedish citizen, a 65-year-old man from Norrland, was detained in Thailand in July. Due to consular confidentiality, we cannot comment further on the individual case,” says Hanna Johansen at the Foreign Ministry’s press service to SVT.

 

According to the North Sweden news site Norran.se which first reported about the arrest, Thai police has not yet requested assistance from Swedish police.

 

“Skellefteå police has not received any request to assist with any investigative measures in the case,” says police chief Lars Westermark.

This is a first for Thailand to mention an arrest of a foreigner without giving any details at all as to why he was arrested.. Serious crime could be anything. I have seen murderers, molesters, dealers, any many other foreigners blatantly advertised as being caught. What is so special that nothing is said with this Swedish man?

Who ?......That would need an investigative reporter this site only copies from other news sources, Maybe one of the TV stations have them.

The attached article says.... 

None of the media mentioning the case reveals any details of the “serious crime” the Swede is accused of. Norran.se does, however, mention that according to the Thai police, the Swede was caught in the act “red handed”. 

 

My request was for ALL involved in this report.

That is the problem with speculation. You have a far larger chance of being wrong that being right. Of course if you wait for more information, you may be right or wrong.

Could it be the case is shrouded in secrecy because it may be an important Swedish govt official?

They weren't arrested for just playing bridge, they were arrested (and later released) because it was thought at the time that they were gambling (for money), bridge is perfectly legal.

No, I remember that yes there was discussion about gambling but the crime was actually playing using cards not sold in Thailand.  Apparently, the Police said that Thai packs have a tax sticker on them showing that tax has been paid.  I thought it was ridiculous at the time as they were all respectable people.

That was what the authorities diverted to after it was realised that they were not gambling, which is what they were initially arrested for.

Try researching before posting: a group of retired OAP's were arrested in Pattaya for playing Bridge some years ago. The shakedown went pear-shaped when a good old girl refused to pay!!!
