Statisticians are the heartbeat of most enterprises. Insurance, consumer goods, you name it. Without them, the wheels would be falling off everywhere. I am not one myself, but I have had extensive training in the field.

 

OTOH, economics is known as the dismal science for a reason. Economists all point in different directions. Consensus is as rare as a unicorn.

I think you are a bit misinformed. Nothing moves in a straight line. Economic data does not and neither does the stock market. Economists look at overall trends. They don't subscribe to your theories.

 

What they often use are moving averages to smooth out the bumps. A 3 week moving average would be above a 6 week moving average indicating an upwards trend.

Another way to establish a trend. A 6 month linear regression would indicate an uptrend.
