STATEMENT BY MATTHEW MILLER, SPOKESPERSON

August 7, 2024

 

On the Dissolution of Move Forward Party in Thailand

The United States is deeply concerned by Thailand’s Constitutional Court ruling today ordering the dissolution of the Move Forward Party and the banning of 11 of its leaders from politics.

 

This decision disenfranchises the more than 14 million Thais who voted for the Move Forward Party in the May 2023 election and raises questions about their representation within Thailand’s electoral system.

 

The Constitutional Court’s decision also jeopardizes Thailand’s democratic progress and runs counter to the aspirations of the Thai people for a strong, democratic future.

 

Inclusive political participation strengthens social cohesion and is a critical component of resilient national institutions.

 

The United States does not take a position in support of any political party, but as a close ally and friend with deep and enduring ties, we urge Thailand to take actions to ensure fully inclusive political participation, and to protect democracy and the freedoms of association and expression.

Possibly, but more importantly, the USA needs friends close to the South China Sea in order to stop China's 'country buy outs'.

Sure true... All countries should make a statement.. The CC has called to respect the decision, but they can't control the freedom of speech of other nations.. And there should be consequences too for Thailand as boycotting importing goods or so to show it is not accepted by world to pretend a democracy and be a dictatorship without freedom of speech, writing and elections, as all problems occured since the MFP was the winner of the elections

EU should cut connections and deny visas for Thai Govt. Ban them from entering EU and US.

This from a country that just denied all the Democrat voters a choice for the Presidential candidate. Instead they stuck the lame VP in there without anyone actually voting her in.

If there aren't major protests then ordinary Thais are doomed........the elites will have won again and know they can just carry on fighting for their place at the trough and to hell with everyone else.

I guess the strategy being to fob off the electorate with the current administration.

 

A facade of being a change from the last few years but also able to be bought upfront, having a greater understanding of “how things work” and, if they “misbehave”, can be held to ransom over Thaksin and his freedoms.

FYI the American people WILL get a chance to vote for her, soon.  She is only a candidate, the people can choose whether they want her or not!

This is so tiring, trying to educate those who don't understand the US electoral process. 

Democrat voters can still choose WHOMEVER THEY WANT TO. The DNC is a private group, with their own rules.

If you want a different candidate, put up your other candidate.

This is great news, only great amounts of shame, humiliation and egg on the face, are driving forces behind any kind of reform or change in this rather regressive nation. 

 

The reform that Move Forward wanted was simply the elimination of the abuse of power and draconian sentences, when it came to LM laws. 

 

If there was any argument that the ruling powers could have made about Thailand being a democracy, it is certainly gone now that the election was stolen from the duly elected PM Pita, and on top of that his party has been disqualified entirely in the name of regression, and preserving the status quo, as these foreign powers stated.
