Pregnant Whale Found Dead on Phuket Beach, Suffocated by Rubbish

A pregnant whale, tragically choked by a stomach full of rubbish, was found dead on Phuket’s Bang Tao Beach, a sobering revelation of marine pollution's deadly impact.

Discovered on September 2, the 2.24-metre-long female Dwarf Sperm Whale had stranded herself on the shores of Choeng Thalay subdistrict, Thalang district. Experts from the Upper Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre confirmed the whale was pregnant with a 50-centimetre-long male calf.

The veterinary investigation painted a grim picture. Severe abrasions indicated the whale’s struggle as it fought to survive while stranded. Despite efforts to save it, the whale succumbed to an overwhelming amount of waste trapped within its system.

“The whale choked to death,” vets disclosed, revealing that the respiratory system contained air bubbles and fluid. A thorough examination unearthed kilogrammes of marine debris—including straws, plastic bags, and rope—clogging the whale’s digestive tract, rendering it unable to feed and leading to severe malnourishment.

This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, starkly highlighting the urgent need to address marine pollution. The devastating death of the pregnant whale serves as a poignant reminder of our shared responsibility to protect marine life from the scourge of waste.

Another victim of the human race, and a complete disregard for the planet. Sure, lots of trash from all over SE Asia, but despite the ever increasing instance of things like this all over Phuket, Thailand continues to bumble along with complete disregard for trash management. Officials have nothing but lame ideas and photo ops at beach clean-ups to make it look like they care, but there remains no effective waste management ethos, and Thais of all ages have no problems bringing food and toys to the beach, and leaving the trash behind for someone else to deal with. Same with fishermen...no respect or appreciation for the very thing that sustains them. Some things will never change.
