What is this cap on floodlight?

Featured Replies

There is a screw on cap at the back of this floodlight, no idea what it's purpose is. The light has stopped working for some reason, tried changing the globe but still doesn't work.

  • The cap has a grease nipple under it. Just take the cap off, grease the nipple, screw the cap back on and your electrons will again move freely. My definitive answer.

  • OK, I will not apply my engineering experience to further "guesses".

  • "I think I have the correct answer, and that is that the cap allows the light to be wired through the back"   Good for you, this is now CLOSED !   You are lucky it got that far giv

Since it's stopped working, just unscrew it and find out :whistling:

I suspect it's holding the guts inside the casting.

Already done that, just see some wires inside.  I'm sure there is somebody who know exactly what it's for, no more guesses thanks.

Well, it definitely doesn't "hold the guts together".

No good deed goes unpunished....it seems.

Unscrew the cap. Inspect. Dissect.

When it comes to electrical items a guess isn't good enough. I'm not being ungrateful but I want someone who can say exactly what the cap is for.

Should i turn on the power and stick a screwdriver inside as well?

I wonder if he has tried to switch it off and back on again?

Everyone thinks they're a comedian.

The outside of the cap looks like it has a photon sensor on the end. Were any of the wires connected to the cap ?

There is power to the pond pump from the same source, so unless there's a fuse in the light itself.

No. There's just a red dot on the cap.

Yep, even stuck my wet finger in the socket.

Does the light have to be turned on manually or is it automatic ?

Manually.

No of course not. It’s most likely an access port, look for a screw inside the the unit that will release the light socket.

It looks like it could be for cable penetration.

Once removed, is there a thread to screw in a gland?

Middle finger?

Actually that is exactly what I would do, with a mains tester screwdriver.

I have looked inside but all I see are a couple of wires, but that suggestion makes sense.

TBH from the picture you have posted, it is very difficult to recognize exactly what type, model this is. Any labels stuck on it? Or any other identifiable markings?

See if there’s a holding mechanism/clip against the rear of the socket inside the housing.
