A fire erupted on a yacht near Ao Po Grand Marina in Thalang District, Phuket, at 10:55 on October 3. The blaze was accompanied by a loud explosion, alarming nearby residents and tourists. 

 

The vessel, identified as a foreign-owned sailboat, was floating near Ko Rad island when the incident occurred, with emergency crews dispatched to the scene. As the boat is several kilometres offshore, it made access and extinguishing the fire difficult.

 

 

One eyewitness recounted the frightening moment: “I was at the hotel when I heard a loud bang, like a transformer explosion. It was a shock to the system.”

 

Initial reports indicate that the yacht had just returned from dropping off passengers when its engine malfunctioned, leading to the fire. The boat’s captain, believed to be a foreign national, was injured in the incident and has since been transported to Mission Hospital for treatment.

A  boat, the Flamingo Lady 2, exploded and caught fire near Ao Por Grand Marina in Pa Khlok, Thalang District, Phuket, before sinking into the sea. The incident occurred shortly after the boat had returned from dropping off passengers, and the damage is initially estimated at 4.3 million baht.

 

The boat, operated by Captain Jaroon, had departed from Ao Por Pier at 10:00, transporting 22 tourists to Koh Naka Yai. After safely dropping off the passengers, the boat continued its return journey with only two crew members onboard: the captain and a machinery operator.

 

At approximately 10:35, between Koh Naka Yai and Koh Raet, the boat’s right engine malfunctioned, causing a loss of control over the engine’s speed. The overheated engine produced sparks that ignited fuel vapors, leading to an explosion and fire.

 

Both the captain and the machinery operator attempted to extinguish the fire, but it quickly spread. Captain Jaroon suffered minor leg injuries and was transported to Thalang Hospital.

 

Police Colonel Nikorn Chuthong from Thalang Police Station, along with other officers and several agencies, deployed a speedboat to inspect the site. However, the boat had already been engulfed in flames and was swept away by the wind before sinking into the sea, at a depth of approximately 3 to 4 metres. Officials plan to further assess the wreck once the tide recedes.

 

The witness, Mr. Ali, 43, stated, “The boat was moving by itself, and the engine suddenly shut down. When the captain checked the engine, it exploded due to overheating. I rushed to help after the fire started but could only watch as the boat burned.”

 

Further investigations into the cause of the explosion and assessment of the damage will continue.

Bad seamanship. The temp of the engines are indicated on the dashboard. To switch off on time would have saved the boat.

The article states :-

If the yacht is conducting any business in Thailand it would have to be Thai registered and have a Thai Captain .   A foreign Captain is not allowed .  

Ah.....the old exploding engine excuse. Up there with with 'The brakes failed'.
