Varifocal prescription.

Featured Replies

Does anybody have first hand experience of getting a new pair of glasses with a varifocal prescription. Guys in my area say it's best to go to Bangkok which I am willing to to. Anybody?  By the way also known as bifocals

There are no government standards or licensing for those giving vision tests in most optical shops.  Many learn OJT.  You can get a  competent vision test and prescription at most larger hospitals with an ophthalmology dept.  but be sure to specifically ask for a VISION TEST and prescription.  If you ask for an EYE EXAM, you get a physical examination of the eyes, not a vision test.

For the best, Rutnin Eye Hospital near Asok in Bangkok but that's really overkill for a vision test.

In my experience, the term "Varifocal" is often used interchangeably with "Progressive" lenses,  If you want bi-focals, be sure to make that clear.

For years I have been going to OG Optitician in Bangkok, a very short 5 minute walk from BTS Udom Suk on Sukhumvit.  Always an ophthalmologist on duty.  They can post your new glasses to you - mine have always arrived safely.

BTW bifocals and varifocal (also known as multifocal or progressive) lenses are two different kind of prescriptions.

Hi, post resurrection !

What is the cost in Bangkok say of a new pair of lenses - varifocal and photochromic - with antireflective SHMC coating ?

(just the lenses, I have frames)

I've just paid 36,000 for progressive lenses plus a frame which had 70% discount.

The add-ons are a rip off. It got to well over 50,000 Baht as she asked about tint, anti glare, pc vision, etc, etc! More expensive than UK now.
