I had to go Houston urgently a few years back. 

 

My employer bought the tickets, Bangkok, Narita, Houston.

The flight was full, from Narita to Huston, no business class. I'm in economy, International flight, I was surprised I had to pay for a beer (I order 4 at a time on the credit card).I heard you got to pay for alcohol on all economy international flights into the USA. 

 

Emirates is probably the best airline for comfort and food when flying in their planes, but the changeover at Dubai can be very questionable, no problem when changing going to the UK, but on the way back for Bangkok even with a 3hr layover can end up a disaster.

I ended up getting at the terminal for Bangkok less than half an hour before take off.

This was due to the unhelpfulness and couldn't care less attitude of the staff. If I had not met up with a lady going on the same flight as me, who knows what might have happened.

For the sake of the person with the confused emo. There was a 3 hr layover and I only managed to get to the terminal for Bangkok less than a half hour before boarding the plane. Get it??

It's depending of airplane type and the airline's request for inventory and seats. I've tried KLM's B747 from AMS to BKK, it was my first and last long distance flight with KLM, only Aeroflot was worse...

It is mine too, I will never use them again. If only I could be sure of no hassles in Dubai when changing over Emirates would be my first choice.

Emirates first class Dubai lounge also has its own air bridge leading directly from the lounge into the first class cabin of their A380s, ensuring all the rockstars and celebrities etc cannot be seen by other passengers making their way to the gate to board their flights. 
 

But should said celebs want to hang at the bar, then they are fair game for you business-classers, so keep your autograph book and selfie stick handy!

Never paid for a drink in economy ever. Including this May on JAL. Actually it was a code share with American.

Yes, I've used this, they also have in the business lounge at Dubai, not all A380 flights 👍

 

It's handy to drink your last beer just a few metres from entering the plane.

As much as I enjoy a good nap, the idea of paying $100-$200 an hour extra for a more comfortable seat and a marginally nicer meal just isn't on my list o' stuff I'm willing to spend my money on. 

 

I still recall shoveling dog poop for under $1 an hour back in the day.  To pay 100x that for a nap?  No thanks.

If you’re tall and suffer discomfort from not being able to straighten your legs, then the extra expense can be worth every cent, especially if you can afford it.
 

Doesn’t have to be business class or anywhere near $200 an hour extra as premium economy works for some, as do exit aisles. 

Can’t take it with you…

Before / after take off do you search the cabin for rows with no passengers at all in the row and ask to transfer to that row?

 

Heard this from an ex cabin crew steward who said this is fairly common and most airlines will not hesitate to allow the passenger to change rows.  But might stipulate that the passenger must go back yo the  original row, as per the boarding pass, before landing because of aircraft weight balance rules.

As soon as "boarding completed" is anounced you can try to change. Either by just moving and then ask them if its ok, or asking first and then move (but then maybe somebody else was faster). Exeptions may be emergency exit rows.

I haven't flown since before Covid but I understand that since airlines have begun charging higher prices for seats deemed desirable, they have become much stricter about not allowing passengers who haven't paid the premium rate to occupy them.  There's been any number of YT videos of angry passengers arguing with FAs about not being allowed to change to a better seat.

 

BTW, Many don't know that on some airlines A380 seat configurations, there's a "secret" small coach section in the rear of the upper deck.  On most seat charts, it just shows as the last 16 rows.  It is really pretty nice. 2-2-2 seating and so few passengers you hardly ever get jostled. Rarely a wait at the toilet.  They are well known now to frequent flyers who book them up pretty quickly but worth asking about at check-in.

There is, at the top of the stairs outside the bathrooms, but it's unmanned and no seating area so the rear bar is used by anyone wanting to socialise or have their drinks poured for them.  Pic from the internet.

Which airline is this?  2-2-2 in economy on an A380 seems crazy.  Qatar have economy in the upstairs rear and Emirates upstairs at the front on some variants but both are 2-4-2
