Was thinking that this is the responsibility of the restaurant owners' community to sort out, not nutters with baseball bats. If I were a customer and became intimidated by an outsider with the restaurant taking no action I would go talk to the most senior person and make it clear that if the restaurant was not going to do anything about it I would walk out without paying, or maybe with a deduction. It maybe that the customers have to take the initiative in getting ultimate police action.

 

I remember being approached by a semi-intimidating beggar as I sat outside a Phnom Penh restaurant on a tourist street. I got up and went to the manager and asked if he was going to do anything about it. He ummed and aaghed and I made it clear I would walk and never come back. He immediately went and confronted the beggar and I did go back a few days later and the manager came over and said he was happy I had taken that action because he had since talked with a few of his neighbouring restaurateurs and they had all decided to support each other in stopping the street beggars coming to table.

I reckon a nice hard wod walking stick would do the job. A tad more covert and with it's smaller diameter would wreak havoc on the extremeties, esescially the lower. Maybe the locals could club together and hire some private security guys . Suitably armed with BB bats they would soon discourage these low lifes who plague Patts .

I remember a few years ago at a concert there was a scruffy old Thai guy harassing 2 members of the audience . The security soon dealt with him by ripping his shirt off and giving him a kicking with their large boots .

Instant justice . Shame things like this aren`t allowed in the Liberal West anymore .

You can try to use the bat to threaten someone to leave.... but if they will not leave, you prepared to beat them for it? not only that don't be surprised if show up at your business the next day and your windows are shattered or the place is vandalized

mafia is kind of a loose term for gang... pattaya has a taxi mafia..  that threatens uber and grab drivers and dont use meters.

 

There use to be a Russian mafia operating in Pattaya, not sure if they moved on or pay the media and police to stay out of their business operating like yakuza.

You might not like it.

But not everyone.

Especially when the beggars started to look like extortionists.

I would rather applause such an operator; brave enough to defend own workplace.

Some deserves sympathy. 

Some doesn't.

If they want any compassion from others, they better behave themselves and look peaceful.

Did you read the original post or simply start spouting off without bothering? This was hardly a mild mannered beggar that comes a visiting regular... he bothers the customers, demanding money. 

If you prefer to be bothered  by someone demanding money off you than see him removed by the owner you are at odds..... I suspect there would be  customers left behind , glad to see the back of this guy.

Interesting and thanks. Where I lived in Khon Kaen Province, the popular and busy "farang" bar also had this arrangement, but not every few hours. Once a night, the local police used to call, do a check to see if all okay and sign the book which was kept in a box near the main entrance. This was not for Burmese beggars (none in that part of Thailand), but for any abnoxious drunk or drugged ex-pats, tourists or Thais causing problems.  Eventually, the landlord and myself became Tourist Police Volunteers and a small area in the bar became an information point. It became a very busy family orientated bar with pool, quiz and speciality food nights, also a children's play area for Thai and foreign kids. This was pre-covid and sadly, trading eventually ceased. The landlord now teaches English, firstly in Vietnam but now back in Thailand. I moved to Cambodia.
