Thailand one of the worst places to drive

Featured Replies

The worst countries to drive in, according to tourists. Thailand ranks number 5th scariest place on the planet to drive.

I don't drive here, but my wife does. She is truly a horrible driver. Funny enough, in 5 years since we have been together she did not have a single accident. She must be doing something right, but it really does not make sense. The way she drives, we should have been both dead many times.

Should we care about what tourists think about something they are not used to?

Probably they will also complain that the local food is too hot.

Since I live in Thailand I didn't travel to many countries, but I was a couple of time in Phnom Phen. Over there, they drive very different than in Thailand. Often people drive and ride slow on intersections and they somehow wiggle between each other in any direction. It seems to work, because the locals are used to it. As an outsider I find it confusing.

But I don't expect that the locals will change because any outsider has trouble adapting.

My tip for tourists: Don't assume anything is like back home. It's not.

I never drive in Thailand. Too stressful.

Vietnam is OK. They drive on the Right 😉

I don’t have any problems driving here, so far. Just need to keep your eyes peeled and be patient. My wife won’t drive in the city, her cutoff point in cm is about 15km outside of the city.

Riding a motorbike in Pattaya feels safer than London. The Thai stats are full of speeding, no licence, drunk, underage, drugs people, avoid all that brings down the risk to a low level, plus avoid riding at night

Many Thai drivers are impatient and have steam coming out of their ears.

As an everyday driver I find it essential to be constantly alert to everything around me and not be too put off by some others less than gracious  behaviour.

Common sense rules ...

... defensive driving skills

... speed limit, as SPEED KILLS

... IF on scooter .. HELMET

... 4 wheel vehicles no more dangerous here than USA

It's the scooter deaths (70+%) that jacks up the death rate.

24 yrs here, and the very few dings / oops I've experienced, have been my fault.  Only one, very recent, cost more than pocket money.

I actually find driving a MC safer here/TH, than the USA.

Mr Happy, noting the carnage on the roads, and yet, has been incident free ... :coffee1:

Defensive driving can kill you here, especially on a highway.

Living in bangkok for 3 years in my 20s, thought i was invincible. In retrospect, i remember faintly several times where i could have and probably should have been killed. Whenever im there now it seems scary on the roads. Id prefer to take the train whenever possible

A couple of year ago  ther was an online poll re;' the worse counrties  to drive in, at that time  Thailand was voted number 1  as the worse country, I showed this to  my wife who was very happy that Thailand  had come first in something

Pretty silly news blip, with apples & oranges comparisons ...

... "As Drive previously reported, there were 461,312 road accidents recorded on India’s roads in 2022, of which 168,491 resulted in fatalities. For context, that is approximately 146 times greater than Australia’s national toll of 1152 recorded in the same year.'

India having 56 times the population and 273 times more motorcycles than OZ.

Tourist ... :cheesy:
